Peatland Specialized Species
Watercolor
28”x36”
This illustration represents over 20 of the most cherished, rare and typifying characters of our beloved lower Kenai Peninsula peatland ecosystems. The mission of this artwork is to inspire place-based affection and stewardship of these treasured landscapes. The framed original will be on display at the Homer Nutcracker Faire (Dec 6-7th) and a limited edition print series will be available soon!
Process:
My work starts with a long incubation period of field outings, discussions with experts, and research into the subjects. I draft a digital black and white sketch on a tablet that is easily modified until the outlines feel in balanced. For example, at first the tern's bill was closed, but then I decided to change it so that she is calling because that felt like the spirit of the painting: protection of the cherished through the active resistance of transgressors. I then format the size in Adobe Illustrator and export a printable PDF of the sketch, then trace the drawing onto Arches hotpress watercolor paper on my drafting table. The illustration is rendered in many layers of transparent watercolor, slowly building toward dark contrast and vibrant colors. For the black of the tern I used Phthalo Blue and Cadmium Red, but for the rest of the darks I used a blend of Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna and Pyrrol Scarlet. These different color combinations read as distinctive to the eye and help the bird stand out against its surroundings.
