King Cove plankton science and art residency! These awesome kids have been out sampling and scavenging in some pretty stormy weather to gather all kinds of plankton from the harbor. Plankton are the source of life in the sea and invaluable for our sustenance. We’re learning all about what kinds are waking up in King Cove and gaining inspiration for art projects. Thanks to all the community for being myself and plankton biologists Petra Lenz and Dan Hartline out here for the week!

I hope that you can join me tomorrow evening at the Pratt Museum for an art workshop all about observing the moon phases! We will cover the phases and when/where/why we find the moon in the sky for each of the 8 major phases. We will practice some fun experimental watercolor techniques, then pre-make a circular template for monitoring the moon during it's upcoming phases, starting tomorrow with the new moon. Registration required so sign up now to save your spot!

It is an honor to have my latest peatland illustration published in Resurgence and Ecologist magazine (both online and in print based in UK) as part of a book review for Peatlands: A Journey Between Land and Water by Alys Fowler. Peatlands are gaining global recognition as habitats of high value for biodiversity and climate change mitigation. I believe that the best way to heal the world is to start with our own hearts and that which we can touch, see and smell. By following this path and loving the little wetland right at home, my work has caught the attention of a global community and in a very small yet precious way contributed to the greater whole. It feels like there is so little within our power to change and help, but by keeping authenticity and humility at the core of my work I have managed to find hope. https://www.resurgence.org/magazine/issue354-60-transformative-years.html

Peatland Specialized Species
Watercolor
28”x36”

This illustration represents over 20 of the most cherished, rare and typifying characters of our beloved lower Kenai Peninsula peatland ecosystems. The mission of this artwork is to inspire place-based affection and stewardship of these treasured landscapes. The framed original will be on display at the Homer Nutcracker Faire (Dec 6-7th) and a limited edition print series will be available soon!

Process:
My work starts with a long incubation period of field outings, discussions with experts, and research into the subjects. I draft a digital black and white sketch on a tablet that is easily modified until the outlines feel in balanced. For example, at first the tern's bill was closed, but then I decided to change it so that she is calling because that felt like the spirit of the painting: protection of the cherished through the active resistance of transgressors. I then format the size in Adobe Illustrator and export a printable PDF of the sketch, then trace the drawing onto Arches hotpress watercolor paper on my drafting table. The illustration is rendered in many layers of transparent watercolor, slowly building toward dark contrast and vibrant colors. For the black of the tern I used Phthalo Blue and Cadmium Red, but for the rest of the darks I used a blend of Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna and Pyrrol Scarlet. These different color combinations read as distinctive to the eye and help the bird stand out against its surroundings.
