Just a quick thought. I've noticed through my mastering flow and process - somewhat accidentally, somewhat deliberately - that I don't lean on limiting for "volume" hardly at all usually, when "volume" (read: loud levels) are needed in a master. I've found that more and more, just the process of bringing out what I feel and hear as the "greatness" of a given mix gets me/us to a volume level that works GREAT for the given platforms, while also really nicely serving the music. Almost always, save for the few projects where hard limiting really benefits the *sound* of the project, at most I'm simply getting maybe occasional hits on the output limiting stages. That is, I'm not consistently needing to peak limit for sheer level *at all*.
Hm! Take that for what you will, and please feel free to discuss...
