Presenting more pieces from our authentic collection! Our collection also includes various pieces from the Sarakatsani, an ethnic Greek population who were nomadic shepherds. The pictured piece is a wedding flag called the Flambouro. They were typically decorated in a cross or Greek key fashion and adorned with bells, tassles, ribbons, as well as apples.

Want to see more? Attend the 50th Anniversary Gala on February 3rd at the Pines Manor to admire even more pieces!

Our authentic wardrobe collection also consists of aprons from various regions of Greece including Macedonia, Thrace, Mainland Greece, and Epirus. Here are some examples of these aprons, some of which date back to the early 1800s.

Presenting more pieces from our authentic costume collection! Our collection also includes pieces from various regions of Thrace. These two pieces are from the traditional dress "Tsoukna" from the Kavakli region of Eastern Rumelia, Northern Thrace. The name "Tskouna" is given to this jumper dress as well as the costume in its entirety. The dress was typically made from wool and widened from the waist down, creating an A-line style. The embroidered part of the chest was called the "Korfos" typically using bright colors for young women and darker colors for older women.

Our authentic costume collection also includes pieces from Karditsa, Thessaly. These pieces are from the traditional dress Karagkouna, which has many variations and styles throughout the region of Thessaly. The pieces seen here are the woolen coats that accompany the costume which feature detailed, colorful embroidery as well as tassels and pleats.

Another piece of our authentic costume wardrobe is the simple, everyday outfit from Trikeri, Magnesia, Thessaly. This costume, unlike the bridal version referred to as the "golden costume" (“chrysi foresia”), is more casual and is accompanied by an apron rather than the intricate silver buckles of the bridal version. Both versions feature a pleated dress that is usually short and frequently decorated at the hem, but the complexity of the embroidery varies between the two types.

Stay tuned for more insight into our authentic wardrobe collection as we lead up to our 50th Anniversary Gala on February 3rd at the Pines Manor!

Throughout the past 50 years, the Hellenic Dancers of NJ have amassed a collection of authentic wardrobe pieces in addition to the copies made by Presbytera Eleni Chakalos. As we approach our 50th Anniversary Gala, we wanted to share these authentic pieces in our collection.

Below are pictures of the Sakkofoustano from the island of Karpathos. This was, and occasionally continues to be, worn by the unmarried girls and brides of Olympos, Karpathos. It consists of two main parts: the skirt and the "sakko." This costume sets itself apart from others because of its vivid colors, intricate embroidery, and sequins. As headpieces, they wore a scarf, decorated with flowers, with hanging braided colored beads.

We will continue to share more of our collection as we lead up to our 50th Anniversary Gala on February 3rd at the Pines Manor!

Exactly 11 months until our 50th Anniversary Gala! To celebrate, here's another fun fact about the Hellenic Dancers of New Jersey.

The Hellenic Dancers of New Jersey has over 600 traditional costumes from over 45 different Hellenic communities/villages, most of them handmade by our founder Presbytera Eleni Chakalos. Additionally, throughout our 50 years, we have acquired a substantial collection of authentic pieces (from Karpathos, Thrace, Epiros, Thessaly, and other regions) some of which are over 250 years old.

Look out on April 3rd for our next fun HDNJ fact!

Our 50th Anniversary Taverna Night celebration is exactly a year away! In anticipation for the gala, we will be posting some facts and history of our organization from over the past 50 years. Our first post is dedicated to Presbytera Eleni Chakalos, the driving force behind the founding of this group.

Did you know that Mrs. C’s family was from the Mani Peninsula in Peloponneso, Greece? She attributed her perseverance and stubbornness to her Maniot background.

Did you also know that Mrs. C was regarded as the “Nona” of the Boston Lykeion Ellinidon for her support for their organization? Thank you Mike Savas for sharing that with us.

This is the costume of the rural Cypriot women of the region of Karpasia, Cyprus. With its strong local characteristics, the costume resonates with simplicity and authenticity while also emphasizing feminine beauty. The soft colors and original embroidery express the uniqueness of the Cypriot costume.
