PATTY IS SUCH A GIRLY NAME directed by Giorgos Georgopoulos swept a total of 7 awards at the 17th Iris Awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Original Score, Best Sound, Best Supporting Actress.

On May 27, 2026 the film had its West Cost Premier on opening night celebrating the landmark 20th Anniversary of Los Angeles Greek Film Festival at the historic Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, followed by a live Q&A with Georgopoulos after the screening.

LAGFF is a proud supporter of the entire Greek cinema community and we celebrate along with all the nominees and winners of this year’s IRIS Awards.

Key Category Winners from the 17th Hellenic Film Academy Iris Awards:

First-Time Director: Stergios Dinopoulos and Krysianna Papadakis for BEARCAVE.

Best Actress: Hara Kyriazi for BEARCAVE.

Best Actor: Christos Passalis for Beachcomber.

Best Supporting Actor (tie): Christos Valavanidis for RECEPTIONS and Antonis Tsiotsiopoulos for LIFE IN A BEAT.

Best Supporting Actress: Betty Arvaniti for BROKEN VEIN (shared with Youla Boudali for PATTY IS SUCH A GIRLY NAME)

We are thrilled to include two more LAGFF winners in our virtual program, available now through June 19 – BEST FRIENDS FOREVER, directed by Konstantinos Mousoulis and winner of the Audience Orpheus Award; and MAYSOON, directed by Nancy Biniadaki, winner of the LMU Social Justice Award. Both titles are available throughout the United States, and include English subtitles. Once a film is unlocked by June 19, guests have 3 (72 hours) days to complete their viewing.

We are very proud of our Greek filmmakers who have conquered this distinction!

Greece has been selected as the country of honor for the next edition of the Cannes Film Market, which takes place from May 11 to 19.

Honoring the great Greek-French composer Alexandre Desplat was one of the 20th anniversary’s most wonderful moments. The Honorary Orpheus Award was presented to the artist on May 31, 2026, by film director Malcolm Washington. The event was produced by our own Fay Lellios.

Stavros Petropoulos’ feature film project PIRATELAND was awarded with the Discovery Days Jury Prize; Harry Lagoussis received an Honorable Mention for his project PHILOCTETES. The Discovery Days Awards were presented by Discovery Days Director Araceli Lemos and Producer Karina Logothetis. This year’s jury included Giulia Caruso, Director of Catalyst and Industry at Sundance; filmmaker Myrsini Aristidou; Film Independent’s Director of International Programs and filmmaker Louay Khraish; and award-winning producer Sarah Winshall.

Beyond the jury, the lab is supported by a wider network of mentors and experts contributing through screenplay feedback, round-robin meetings, workshops, and group sessions, including Chiara Atik, Ilana Coleman, Ersi Danou, Joel Garber, Pavel Jech, Prashanth Kamalakantan, Ki Jin Kim, Jesse Knight, Jane Casey Modderno, Terrie Samundra, Artemis Shaw, Elia Urquiza, and Colin West. Together, these artists and industry professionals reaffirm Discovery Days’ commitment to championing emerging international voices and fostering meaningful creative exchange.

Special Jury Awards went to director Amerissa Basta for LIFE IN A BEAT; actor Niovi Charalampous for her performance in SMARAGDA - I GOT THICK SKIN AND I CAN’T JUMP; the short film GEKAS by Dimitris Moutsiakas; and to the animated film POPPY FLOWERS by Evridiki Papaiakovou. Honorable Mention was received by Vangelis Mourikis for his performance in PATTY IS SUCH A GIRLY NAME.

The Audience Orpheus Awards went to Iconic Films’ BEST FRIENDS FOREVER by Konstantinos Mousoulis; and to THE SMOKER by Alexa Economacos.

Loyola Marymount University, Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, Department of Classics and Archaeology Prof. Katerina Zacharia presented the inaugural LMU Social Justice Awards to the feature film MAYSOON by Nancy Biniadaki, and to the short film THE WOLVES RETURN by Stelios Moraitidis
