Meet Zeke, Avalon Music Academy of Holland’s September Student of the Month! 🎸🎉

Zeke began guitar lessons at Avalon on his 12th birthday, and he’s now been playing with us for 2½ years! It has been so exciting to watch him grow: not only as a musician, but also as a young man.

Zeke puts a lot of time into his playing, and it shows! His favorite musicians include Chris Stapleton, Bon Jovi, and Luke Bryan. When he’s not making music, he enjoys spending time outdoors and working on hands-on projects.

The coolest thing he’s learned in lessons? “You can learn whatever you want if you put in the effort.” 💪

His advice to fellow students is just as encouraging: “Keep working hard and if you get angry just stop and try again later.”

Congratulations, Zeke! We’re proud of your dedication, growth, positive attitude, and all the music you’re bringing to the world! 👏🎶

In our Music Academy September Newsletter sent out yesterday, I included this letter. My mom, Ruth Burkholder, was an elementary music teacher at West Ottawa Schools for 30 years. When she retired, she began teaching Kindermusik & founded Avalon with Marie in 2004. Marie & I were cleaning out the garage over the weekend and found some of her files & letters. This is a letter she wrote to one of our Avalon students who was interviewing her for a class project.

I wanted to follow up as there's more to the story. I found the student she's referencing from 1959 and spoke to him on the phone for a half hour yesterday! We had a wonderful conversation about music, life, and my mom. He has had an awesome and storied career in music. It's a great example of one of the things I like to tell our students, "You never know where music is going to take you." I'll add to that, "... and you meet a lot of amazing people along the way."

Today was an emotional day at Avalon! After seven incredible years as my guitar student, Henry had his last lesson before heading off to college. Watching him grow as a musician and as a person has been such a joy and an honor.

Henry, your dedication, hard work, creativity, and steady progress have made these seven years truly special. I’m so proud of everything you’ve accomplished, and I can’t wait to see where your journey takes you next! Wishing you an amazing college experience and an exciting new chapter.
