🏡 A house with over a century of stories, and a few surprises hidden inside!

Built around 1917, the William and Annie Livingston House, affectionately known as The Pines, is a beautiful example of Craftsman-style architecture and a fascinating piece of Holladay's history.

Surrounded by towering evergreens, some planted long before the house was built, this home tells the story of Holladay's transformation from a rural agricultural community to a place where families could enjoy country living while working in Salt Lake City.

Today, its current owners have carefully restored the home's historic character, preserving original details and uncovering a few surprises along the way. A former attic dance hall? A century-old wh***ey bottle? A time capsule hidden in the staircase? This house has stories!

🎨 What could the future of public art look like in Holladay?

Maybe it's a colorful utility box, a sculpture in a neighborhood park, an artist-designed bench, or a creative way to welcome people into our community.

Public art can take so many forms, and we're excited to explore the possibilities!

The City of Holladay has been working on a Public Art Plan to help guide how we bring more art into our community. The plan focuses on celebrating Holladay's unique character, creating more opportunities for artists, and finding creative ways to incorporate art into the places we use every day.
Our approach? Start small, learn, and grow!

We recently shared the plan with City Council, and now we'd love to share it with you!

Hello Mystery lovers! From the moment this house was built in 1994, we christened it Barbie’s Dream House, and the name has stuck.

Generally, the Holladay Historical Commission looks at older houses. But this house has been a part of Holladay lore for 30+ years, so we couldn’t resist attending its farewell.

This house was owned by the Wade family, with the property changing hands over the years under their various entities. One mystery: it’s said that the house was designed to mimic one built Wayne Newton.

Another mystery: why did no one ever live in it? The rumor over the years is that a man built the house as a surprise for his wife, but she declined to move into it. We found the obit of that wife, the most recent owner, Janet Wade, who died this past July. Here she is, looking rather like Barbie.

The house has stood for 32 years, empty, except for occasional worker’s cars out front, and perhaps a few uninvited guests. It will soon be demolished, and a new house will take its place. But will it be as intriguing as Barbie’s Dream House?

🏡 One house. Two architectural styles. Nearly a century of Holladay history.

Built in 1939, the Betty and Paul Dinwoodey House offers a fascinating glimpse into Holladay's transformation from a rural community to a residential suburb.

What began as an English-style cottage grew in 1956 with a Midcentury Modern addition. Throughout the home, beautiful woodwork and clever design details reflect the family's connection to the historic Dinwoodey Furniture Company.

Today, the house and its surrounding landscape remain a remarkable piece of Holladay's history, thanks in part to the dedication of its current owners.

🏛️ What can architecture tell us about religion, family, and community?

Join the Holladay Historical Commission for our November Speaker Series featuring Dr. Martha Bradley-Evans, professor, historian, and author at the University of Utah.

In her presentation, The Architecture of Polygamy, Dr. Bradley-Evans will explore how religious beliefs shape the spaces we build and inhabit. Drawing from her book Constructing Space, she'll examine the architecture of communal FLDS communities and what their built environments reveal about beliefs, gender, family, and religious life.

Dr. Bradley-Evans is an award-winning educator and historian whose work explores Utah's architecture, religion, and history.
