The mission of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center (SLNSC) is to advance understanding of ecology by exploring New Hampshire’s natural world. Through spectacular live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, and lake cruises, Squam Lakes Natural Science Center has educated and enlightened visitors for over forty years about our natural world. Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is located on Route 113 in Holderness, exit 24 off I-93, and is open daily from May 1 through November 1.

Join us on Saturdays during September to count migrating raptors as they pass over Squam Lakes Natural Science Center!

Our data will be submitted to the Hawk Migration Association’s North American raptor migration database to help advance scientific knowledge about raptor populations and migration, and to inform raptor conservation efforts.

Drop-in at the Geology Exhibit to learn hawk identification tips and try your hand at identifying hawks in flight!

Kids’ activities will help budding ornithologists learn to identify raptors in a fun way! Stay for a few minutes or bring a chair and your binoculars and spend a few hours!

Our BioBlitz is wrapping up, and it’s time to celebrate with an Ice Cream Social!

Throughout August, visitors helped us document as many species as possible across our 200-acre campus using iNaturalist. Now, we’re bringing everyone together to reveal our results, highlight surprising finds, recognize standout contributions, and enjoy some ice cream!

Join us as we celebrate the incredible biodiversity of our campus and 60 years of discovery, conservation, and connection to the natural world.

Our new front entrance sign is up, and just in time for the final week of our 60th Anniversary BioBlitz!

So far, we’ve recorded 743 observations and 360 species across our 200+ acres. There’s still time to get outside, explore the trails, and add your discoveries to the count.

Join us Wednesday, September 2, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for The Science of Saw-whet Owls with Brett Amy Thelen, Science Director at the Harris Center for Conservation Education.

Small, secretive, nocturnal, and absolutely awww-inspiring, Northern Saw-whet Owls are one of North America’s most elusive birds of prey.

Each fall, the Harris Center bands saw-whet owls in the Monadnock Region as part of Project Owlnet, an international research effort to better understand population trends and migration patterns for this climate-vulnerable species. Brett will share an overview of the Harris Center’s saw-whet migration monitoring project.

Ages: Adults/Youth 12+

Our final BioBlitz: Walks with an Expert is here!

Join Liz Stevens, Master Gardener, for a closer look at invasive plant species and learn how to identify some of the plants that can threaten New Hampshire’s native ecosystems. Liz will share tips for recognizing invasive species while exploring the Science Center’s property.

A longtime gardener and UNH Master Gardener, Liz has volunteered at the Science Center for years, leading invasive plant information sessions and helping with hands-on removal efforts!

This is the final walk in our BioBlitz: Walks with an Expert series, part of our month-long celebration of the Science Center’s 60th anniversary. Bring your curiosity, learn from an experienced naturalist, and help contribute observations to our BioBlitz through iNaturalist.

Ages: 12 and up

Cost per session: $15 members, $18 non-members

Watch as a Naturalist introduces one of our live animal ambassadors and shares fascinating facts about their behaviors, adaptations, and unique characteristics.

Starting in September, Up Close to Animals will shift to Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.
