JA RANCH

He invented the chuckwagon. He blazed the cattle trails. He made a deal with Quanah Parker himself. And most Texans have never heard his name.

Charles Goodnight was a former Texas Ranger who in 1876 drove 1,600 longhorn cattle into the wild, remote Palo Duro Canyon — land the Comanche had only just been pushed off two years before. He built his camp from timber he cut right out of the canyon walls. No roads. No neighbors. Nothing but canyon, sky, and cattle.

He partnered with an Irish aristocrat named John Adair who put up the money. Goodnight put up everything else — the knowledge, the nerve, and the plan. They called it the JA Ranch, the first cattle ranch in the entire Texas Panhandle.

At its peak it ran 100,000 head of cattle across 1.3 million acres.

When starving Comanche rode in from the reservation looking for buffalo that were already gone, Goodnight didn’t run them off. He made a deal with Quanah Parker — two beeves every other day in exchange for peace. It held.

Goodnight also saved the southern buffalo herd from extinction. The bison his JA Ranch preserved eventually helped stock both Caprock Canyons State Park and Yellowstone National Park.

The man who saved the buffalo, fed the Comanche, and built the Panhandle. And most people couldn’t tell you his name.
