I never wanted to break character on this account, but this is something I need to address before it happens again.
On Saturday night at Screamz, I was working as Kane near the start of the night. It was my second official shift and my first real night working queue lines with my friends… which I absolutely loved. Around 8:20, one of the first groups came through. They were younger teens, acting flirty and weird, but i heard that’s not uncommon in this job, so I brushed it off.
After a couple scares, the group asked for a picture. A young man and the girl he was with were being overly flirty, and I kept trying to shut it down politely, even mentioning that my girlfriend works there with me. They didn’t care. When we took the photo, that same young man groped my ge****ls.
I froze. I managed to say “what the f**k was that” to him, but he didn’t respond. I stayed in character for a few seconds, trying to process what just happened, until they left. Then I went straight to my friends, my girlfriend, and my friend radioed the owners to report it.
The owners and security team were incredibly kind, supportive, and took it seriously. They helped calm me down and tried to track the person responsible. I’m beyond grateful for how they handled it and for the support from my girlfriend and friends along with the Screamz team.
Since then, the owners, security, and managers have already met and developed new protocols to make sure nothing like this ever happens again. The safety of their staff and visitors is their upmost priority, and any form of assault will not be… and has never been… tolerated in any form. They’ve made it clear that if any actor or patron experiences something like this again, we can report it immediately and the show will be temporarily halted to ensure everyone’s safety and limit confusion. That level of care means a lot, and I appreciate it deeply.
But this needs to be said publicly.
Yes, we are entertainers… but we are still people. Under the masks, makeup, and costumes, we are just human beings doing what we love. That does not make us props. It does not give anyone the right to touch, grope, or harass us.
Consent and respect still exist inside the haunt.
Keep your hands to yourself.
Treat people with decency.
That should not have happened, and it wouldn’t have if people understood basic boundaries. I’m still shaken, but I’m not quitting. I love scare acting, and I’m not letting some as***le ruin it for me or anyone else.
So please, remember this…
We might scare you, but that doesn’t make us fair game for any form of retaliation… ESPECIALLY not sexual assault. You came here to be scared, and you got that. We came here to work and have fun, not be assaulted. A costume does not equal consent. So please, remember that.
