“Vanished Under the Suns”
Acrylic and mixed media on canvas
42x60”
Made during my residency at Chautauqua Visual Arts

Lots of words below but they are important to me so here are some thoughts on this piece and where it came from:

There came an afternoon where sensory overload took over, and the only thing I could do was lay directly in the grass among my gardens and woods. I needed to root into the earth simply to let my mental health settle. The shifting suns across this canvas trace time slipping away through dissociation, capturing that urgent need to step outside reality, recalibrate, and survive the weight of modern motherhood.

This painting comes from an ongoing body of work confronting our maternal mental health crisis. Living in a South Shore, MA community deeply impacted by an unbearable postpartum tragedy, and having walked through postpartum depression myself, I hear how constantly our stories are carried in quiet whispers. We talk about isolation, exhaustion, and mental collapse in private, behind closed doors.

I am painting this work to turn up the volume.

Maternal care cannot remain an unspoken burden.

If you have ever felt this kind of overwhelm, dissociation, or quiet struggle, please know your experience is real and you are not alone in it. Feel free to share your thoughts, your memories, or your story below if you feel comfortable. I’m also grateful to continue these conversations in whispers and dms and private voice memos and emails too.

On Monday, a brand new episode of the Let’s Chat podcast drops. After catching up on summer studio happenings up front, I spend the latter part of the conversation diving much deeper into this new body of work, my own postpartum journey, and the vital community conversations surrounding maternal mental wellness that I will be continuing.

Link will be in bio on Monday. Until then, thank you for holding space for this work.

Currently obsessed with the Weigela in my painting and in my garden IRL. And apparently it isn’t pronounced “Whu-Gale-Yuh” but “Way-Guh-Luh.”

I wish this one by the fence at my house had more space to get massive. It’s so close to the fence. I wonder if they’re hard to transplant. Last time I moved a shrub I almost killed it.
