Fugate’s Entertainment Center was a staple in Hazard, Kentucky from 1984 until 2016. Once home to a movie theatre, water park, roller rink, arcade, and bowling alley you would be hard pressed to find someone that did not spend their weekends at Fugate’s. Now the property lays abandoned, a ghost of what it once was. Perry County has purchased the land with plans to tear down the now unsalvageable buildings but before they do, Knott County Central High School Photography students were given permission to explore and photograph the ruins in all their discarded glory.

Students learned about Urban Exploration Photography - a subfield of architecture photography mostly about exploring urban, abandoned buildings - along with the dangers and legalities of the practice. All precautions were taken and permissions granted before stepping on the property. Look through the amazing shots these talented students were able to capture before Fugate’s is gone. Awaken some memories, mourn what once was, and hope for the future.

Special thanks to Scott Alexander (and family) and Perry County Government for giving us permission for this awesome opportunity!

We have started a Photography Class at KCC! And for our first assignment, I think these kids are pretty impressive!

Blind Photography Project: students had to explore sections of objects that cater to different senses. Plot twist: they had to take their pictures blindfolded! They used their other senses to take their pictures. Sections included touch, smell, taste, and hearing. Here are the students favorites!
