Just a Little Artsy

Just a Little Artsy Painting class designed for anyone, artistic or not, who wants to experience the joy of creating. Dates for these painting events will be shared. Why do I paint?

To schedule your own painting event...whether it is a birthday, shower, or any get together, contact us. Step-by-step instructions to paint a 16 by 20 canvas during a single session. You will be guided through the process. No drawing skills required! Follow it exactly...or if you want to deviate and experiment....it would definitely be allowed. In my art classes, we talk about whether our art is r

efrigerator-worthy. (You must ask yourself, "Would my mom post it on the refrigerator?") I want us to move our work beyond being refrigerator-worthy to being wall-worthy! So, during these classes we want to get a "just little artsy"....
You say you can't draw a stick figure...Don't worry...We won't be drawing any stick people! Maybe our artwork might not be a Van Gogh masterpiece. But hopefully, it will be a Van Grace. Even if your artwork is somewhat different than mine, don't stress! You can do your own interpretation. I have designed paintings that are somewhat whimsical...something with a dynamic strong image or sometimes with a wow-factor. It's relaxing. I enjoy the colors and how they mix. Art is more of an experience than a product. It's a right-brained activity... This is our creative side. (So much of our daily life is left brained.) So, come over to the right side with me and get "just a little artsy."

Thanks to everyone who showed up to the sewing estate sale! We sold oodles of fabric at $2 yard. We enjoyed talking to many of mom's quilting friends and shared so many stories of her. She would be glad to have know that she shared her stash with her friends! And although we think we've cleared out half of what she had, we still have lots to sell! Send me a message if you'd like to come and we can set up a time for someone to be there to help you. Here's a picture of what we found in the garage that we had to organize...We had over 160 plastic containers throughout the house and garage and that didn't count the fabric already in the sewing room.

This fellowship has been such a great opportunity to learn and grow as a teaching artist.

In continuation of our celebration of Arts and Humanities month, today's featured Appalachian Teaching Artist Fellow is Grace Henderson. Henderson hails from Hindman, Kentucky, and brings more than 30 years of experience teaching art, mathematics and character education to our cohort.

In addition to being a teacher and teaching artist on our Teaching Artist Roster, Henderson is the force behind just A Little Artsy, which offers visual arts instruction for anyone regardless of their skill level. Check it out at https://justalittleartsy.com/. .

I'm so glad to part of this group! I've learned so much from all of them.

October is Arts and Humanities month! 🎨 🎭

We’re celebrating all month long by featuring artists involved in our Appalachian Teaching Artist Fellowship (ATAF) cohort. The ATAF project is supported by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and provides intensive professional learning opportunities for regional artists through a series of workshops, mentorship with a professional teaching artist and practicum teaching experience in our service area.

Our ATAF artists pictured below include Tammy Clemons, Bugz Fraugg, Nicole Garneau, Don Hammond, Grace Henderson, Bob Martin, Judy Sizemore, and Melanie Turner.

It's that time again! Back to school! Check out this newly renovated classroom that will be devoted to teaching art! But this year will look different for me. I have given up all my math classes, but will continue to teach art one day a week at June Buchanan. Also, I will be teaching art programs in Knott and Perry Counties through various grants. I'm looking forward to focusing on just art. :)

I painted this for my childhood friend that I have been recently reconnected. It's my interpretation of a photo she showed me of her granddaughter and cat. I really enjoyed capturing the interaction between the two. :)
