They chased kids playing hooky back to school.
They collected money for sick beach boys who couldn't make rent.
They made sure every single person on that beach had something to eat.
They were the Waikiki Beach Boys.
And they were the GREATEST ambassadors Hawaii ever had.

Starting around 1901, a group of young Hawaiian men stationed themselves on Waikiki Beach. They offered surf lessons. Canoe rides. Ukulele serenades under the palm trees. They taught presidents, movie stars, and everyday tourists how to catch a wave. They taught them how to LIVE.

Duke Kahanamoku was the most famous. But there were DOZENS.
Chick Daniels. Panama Dave. Turkey Love. Steamboat Mokuahi. Rabbit Kekai.
The best nicknames in HISTORY.

Rabbit got his name because he was lightning fast. Got his beach boy license at just 14 YEARS OLD. Duke took the kid under his wing. Used to call him "Son." Taught him to steer the big outrigger canoes past the reefs. Rabbit would go on to teach Gregory Peck, Kirk Douglas, and Red Skelton how to surf. He was still riding waves at 80.

Blue Makua Sr. started surfing at age 6. On his mother's wooden IRONING BOARD. He would later steer the Waikiki Surf Club to six straight victories across the Molokai Channel. His nephews helped Uncle John set up beach chairs every morning BEFORE school. Then they ran to class.

That was the culture.
That was ohana.

They slept under canoes. Ate fish they caught that morning. Wove coconut hats for tourists while playing ukulele between lessons. If you were scared of the water, they held your board. If you wiped out, they pulled you up. If you were lonely, they played music until you weren't.

They didn't have contracts. They didn't have marketing plans.
They had ALOHA.

"The beach boys represented the very basis of what aloha is," said lifeguard captain Paul Merino. "Welcoming strangers into your home as if they were family."
"It didn't take your money or anything like that," said Pihanui, daughter of original beach boy Gabby Makalena.
They did it because it was WHO THEY WERE.

Then came Pearl Harbor. December 7, 1941. Barbed wire replaced beach blankets. Machine gun nests replaced surfboards. The military fired warning shots OVER the heads of surfers at 5pm every day. Curfew. The golden era was over.

But the spirit NEVER died.
The Beach Boys came back. Stronger. The 1950s and 60s made them legendary. Magazines. Movies. Songs. They were the living proof of what people IMAGINED Hawaii to be.

And the beautiful thing?
Hawaii really WAS like that. Because the Beach Boys MADE it so.
Eddie Aikau's brother Clyde became a beach boy at 19. Decades later, he said something that explains EVERYTHING about these men.
"At 61, I still get a rush when I push somebody and see them stand up for the first time."

THAT is what the Beach Boys gave the world.
Not a product. Not a brand. Not a business.
A feeling.

Didi Robello runs the family beach stand his father Harry opened in the 1950s. He grew up learning from Rabbit, Steamboat, Chick, and Panama Dave. There are ti plants growing at his stand - grown from leaves tossed into the ocean at memorial services for the old beach boys who have passed.

The roots of those plants are fed by the OCEAN ITSELF.
Just like the roots of everything good about Hawaii.

John Makua, son of beach boy Kimo Makua, said it best. "They helped capture moments for visitors and slowed down their lives just for a second to understand the true meaning of aloha."
Every single tourist who has ever stood on a rental board in Waikiki. Felt the warm water around their ankles. Felt the wave push them forward for the FIRST time.

That feeling didn't come from a hotel.
It came from a Beach Boy.
And it always will.

Because some things can't be bought, sold, or trademarked. They can only be SHARED. And the men of Waikiki Beach understood that before the rest of the world even had a word for it.

GOP lawmakers want to authorize $400M in spending for ballroom
Michael Loria

Trump allies in Congress announced that they will seek to authorize $400 million in spending to build the president's ballroom, calling the White House Correspondents' Association dinner incident a "wakeup call."

"If this is not a wakeup, what would be?" said Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham at a news conference Monday night. "The sooner we get the ballroom built, the more hardened it is, the better it is for the country."

A ballroom on White House grounds, Graham said, would allow the president to avoid taking unnecessary risks by leaving the presidential residence. The Secret Service stopped the suspect before he entered the event space.
