Made of bamboo ohe kapala are traditional Hawaiian stamps used for printing of designs onto kapa (bark cloth). The ohe kapala was the final step in the kapa making process but required equal amounts of patience in its ex*****on. Kapala designs were usually simple geometric patterns that created a

Ancient mythology, real fatality and in the end a beautiful piece that introduces the intimate mo'olelo of an artist and his 'ohana.

Huilua takes its name from an ancient fishpond that sits in Kahana Bay on the windward side of the island of ʻOahu. There, my great grandfather (Tutu Pua) resided as Konohiki. To my ʻohana Huilua would become the site of immense tragedy, mystique and fond remembrance. For dad, Huilua would insight...

Background for this piece. My kāne is a painter. He travels between the states and here for months at a time. Previous making this piece he stayed with my ʻohana while we cared for my mama during her last days. We stayed up during those long hours in the evening when she woke in pain, he massaged her to bed, made sure she ate well, made sure we were taken care of while we cared for her.

My mama had wanted him to finish this piece before he left. So, night before he left he stayed up til 1am painting this. She stayed up with us which was unusual for her in her already weakened state. This piece became an impromptu family project. Mama put in her input told us what she liked and didnʻt (she was great at dolling up her opinions). Thereʻs lots of kaona, love and bitter sweet sentiment woven into this piece. Two days later my mama passed. This still serves as a reminder of those last days with my mama. She was so happy to be a part of this project.

The problem with our inventory is, before it even comes into fruition itʻs already claimed. This guy is a part of my daughter Lehiwaʻs ever growing collection.

He was created as an ode to the aliʻi Kahekili (thunder) who was said to have half his body tatted and be quite the crazy kanaka. He is dyed using kukui soot and if you notice the design running down his body replicates that of lightning. If you look even closer over his right brow line youʻll find a moʻo (lizard). He even has interchangeable hair picks 😂

For those of you who know... that feeling that lingers in Hilo during the Merrie Monarch is like May Day on a caffeine drip. Itʻs addicting and something we look forward to annually.

But, this pic is especially special to us. Because, at the bottom of the bleachers sits my mom as she did endlessly every year while we set up for another day at the craft fair. That was her last Merrie Monarch with us. We lost my mama just a few months ago in April. We still look forward to Merrie Monarch next one will just be a little "different".

I spied...he was none the wiser and this is what I got.

Iʻm sad to say the artistic gene didn't get passed down to me. But, the appreciation for it did. Iʻm still impressed by my dadʻs creations ❤️
