Stairway to Art

Stairway to Art The Stairway to Art has closed. Please contact me if you have questions about art works shown. Artists work together for a common goal.

It is stated in their Manifesto:

The Stairway to Art is a cooperative gallery and by its very nature it is a cooperative venture. We have great artistic talent here in East Hawai‘i! The Stairway to Art will provide a well placed venue for a diverse array of art. This venue will respect the member artist’s right to display work of their choice, and by doing so will promote freedom of artistic expr

ession. Art with meaning from political to religious are acceptable subjects as well as nudes, abstracts, sculpture, mindscapes, new media, etc, along of course with more mainstream subject matter such as still-lifes, florals or tropical landscapes and some fine crafts objects. The beauty of this co-op’s formula is that it’s the member artist who decides what work to display, not someone else. Our location is East Hawai‘i’s best to reach both the local and the visitor market. We will do our best to provide a stunning display of fine art and crafts for sale at no-middleman prices that are both fair to the artist and the public, from low-end cards to high-end masterpieces and commissions. Private art lessons and mentoring for art students of all ages will also be provided by some of our artists. What do you think, is that worth a flight of stairs? The founding member artists are Ken Charon, Rebecca Rosen Charon, Alex and Jenny Kupka, Kerrie Ligatich, Steve Parente, MoonStar Rae, Ria Razzauti, Linda Rowell Stevens, Gene Van Dyke, Barry Wilkinson, Carol Yamash*ta and Tomas Belsky. The gallery will also represent and dedicate it’s opening to the late Don Hirleman who’s 100th birthday it will celebrate this month by reintroducing his work to the Hilo art market. The gallery will be open Monday thru Saturday, 9:30 thru 4:30 on market days and 10 - 4 on other days. Call the gallery at 935-1858 or Ken and Rebecca Charon at 966-7343 for more details.

Dear Friends,

Here's wishing you and yours all the best during this Holiday Season and in the year to come no matter what religion you connect with (and for you atheists, the little boy in blue on the right represents you). But most importantly lets all show each other mutual respect and pray for, or contemplate World Peace for a moment of silence during this week. We must imagine first in order for it to become possible.

Aloha from Stairway to Art, Ken & Rebecca Charon

Dear Friends of Stairway to Art,

I'm sending this to inform you that our gallery is closing at the end of December. Due to slow sales, I was already considering this step, but in the end it was the termination of our lease that made the decision for me.
I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand I will miss the social interaction with my artist friends who would come to visit me in the gallery, the days when sales were good and visitors were interesting, but on the other hand there were not enough sales. We did manage to sell about $40,000 worth of art though over the 2 and 3/4 years we were open, which is a significant chunk, but most people walking by on the sidewalk below are looking for other than art works and not enough came up to have a look (more foreigner visitors did than American visitors).
Plus, I feel that the art market has changed dramatically in recent years with the take off of the internet. Although I will have to force myself, I will turn my focus to on-line art marketing for now to increase my presence there and show my work in virtual galleries and therefore to a worldwide audience. I'm hoping that doing that, and entering some select juried shows, will help. It is possible that with that done we will be in the position to try a real gallery again in the future.
We will close the gallery to the public on Christmas Eve, Tuesday, December, 24th at 1 pm. So, if you want to get something before we close, come up before then. After that you can email us at [email protected] or phone us at 966-7343 for an appointment.
Rebecca and I want to thank you all for your support in Stairway to Art.

Aloha and Happy Holidays, Ken Charon.
