It is stated in their Manifesto:
The Stairway to Art is a cooperative gallery and by its very nature it is a cooperative venture. We have great artistic talent here in East Hawai‘i! The Stairway to Art will provide a well placed venue for a diverse array of art. This venue will respect the member artist’s right to display work of their choice, and by doing so will promote freedom of artistic expr
ession. Art with meaning from political to religious are acceptable subjects as well as nudes, abstracts, sculpture, mindscapes, new media, etc, along of course with more mainstream subject matter such as still-lifes, florals or tropical landscapes and some fine crafts objects. The beauty of this co-op’s formula is that it’s the member artist who decides what work to display, not someone else. Our location is East Hawai‘i’s best to reach both the local and the visitor market. We will do our best to provide a stunning display of fine art and crafts for sale at no-middleman prices that are both fair to the artist and the public, from low-end cards to high-end masterpieces and commissions. Private art lessons and mentoring for art students of all ages will also be provided by some of our artists. What do you think, is that worth a flight of stairs? The founding member artists are Ken Charon, Rebecca Rosen Charon, Alex and Jenny Kupka, Kerrie Ligatich, Steve Parente, MoonStar Rae, Ria Razzauti, Linda Rowell Stevens, Gene Van Dyke, Barry Wilkinson, Carol Yamash*ta and Tomas Belsky. The gallery will also represent and dedicate it’s opening to the late Don Hirleman who’s 100th birthday it will celebrate this month by reintroducing his work to the Hilo art market. The gallery will be open Monday thru Saturday, 9:30 thru 4:30 on market days and 10 - 4 on other days. Call the gallery at 935-1858 or Ken and Rebecca Charon at 966-7343 for more details.
