This week in the Studio Barn, nine potters are spending five days raku firing with Frank Vickery, Director of Ceramics. Raku pulls pots from the kiln while they are still red hot and seals them in a reduction chamber, where the burning paper starves them of oxygen. Smoke turns darkens every crackle line and copper glazes flash into purple, gold, and green. No two pieces come out alike, and that is the beauty of it.

This session is full, but ceramics classes and Art by Appointment run year-round in the Studio Barn.

OPEN CALL: 46th Annual Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival Program Cover

The Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival is now accepting submissions for the cover of its 46th annual program.

Open to any artist, the HCCMF is looking for an original painting, drawing, or digital illustration that showcases the 2027 theme: Strings/Piano.

The selected work will be donated to the festival and join the collection of past cover art on permanent display at the Highlands Performing Arts Center.

We have loved calling Highlands our home for 25+ years. We have made life long friends here, helped families build their beautiful mountain homes here and joined the many volunteers in this special town in trying to make a difference in charitable causes - by “paying it forward." In supporting The Bascom’s future, we hope to pass on not just a love of art, but a love of this amazing campus so our children and grandchildren can keep making memories here for generations to come.

You already know the artists in this installment of the Atrium Series. They teach classes, hang the exhibitions, and keep the campus running. Through Saturday, their own work is on display in the Greehey Atrium.

Director of Ceramics Frank Vickery shows crystalline-glazed pots, where each crystal forms by science and chance in a carefully timed kiln cycle. Facilities Manager Madison Minus turns bowls and hollow forms from locally sourced hardwoods and burls. Director of Exhibitions Zachary Rogers brings sculptural work, and Community Engagement Associate Caryn Raming shows paintings and other works on paper. Director of Marketing and Communications Bianca Mitchell hand-presses polymer plate prints of Plateau flora.

Community Engagement Manager Priscilla Galloway makes cotton crochet kitchenware and scrunchies as Mossy Key Studio, Director of Development Jamie Raynor learned the craft of crochet waiting out thunderstorms as a college lifeguard, and Director of Finance & Administration Holly Alligood offers beautiful crochet sweaters.

Every piece is available in the Shop through Saturday, October 17. Stop in Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

Whiteside Mountain, now on a hat.

Our new Bascom trucker hat features a patch modeled after Highlands’ Whiteside Mountain, with our logo in the lower right corner. It’s a Richardson 112 with a heather gray front, charcoal mesh back, and rust brim.

Out of an abundance of caution, The Bascom is closed today, Saturday, October 10, and the 15th Annual Fall Pottery Show has ended early. Thank you to everyone who came out to support our Studio Members yesterday.

If you missed it, work by Bascom Studio Members will be available at the Holiday Market, opening October 31 in the Shop. We hope to see you then.

Get a head start on seasonal gifts at the 15th Annual Fall Pottery Show. Bascom Studio Members have filled Studio Barn with mugs, vases, ornaments, and sculptural pieces, all made and fired here on campus. Every purchase supports the artist who made it and our Creative Community Initiative, which brings accessible arts experiences to our region.
