The Highland Senior Center Dance Lesson group has been an Inland Empire Tradition for the past few decades. Lucy Guess the owner former of Lucy’s Dance Studios in San Bernardino for over 50 years, started these dance classes years ago, under the umbrella of the San Bernardino City Unified Schoo
l District (SBCUSD). Ricardo Tomboc was also a Photography Instructor with the SBCUSD, and a student of several years in Lucy’s Dance Class. During the latter years, Ricardo was assisting Lucy with the newer students instructing with the basic dance steps. When Lucy was no longer able to continue the dance classes. The SBCUSD asked Ricardo if he could continue the classes, and he accepted. Since that time in about 2007, Ricard and his wife Teri have taught hundreds of students, introducing them to the joys, formalities, and benefits of Social Ballroom Dancing. Classes are held almost every Tuesday night at 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. We don’t have classes the week of Thanksgiving and the last 3 weeks of December. The Highland Senior Center (HSC) is located at 3102 Highland Ave., Highland Av, 92346. HSC is located just inside the Patton Hospital, Highland Ave. entrance, and is the first building on the right when you first enter the grounds. Our mission is to:
• Promote and teach Ballroom Dancing in the community at no cost
• Provide a venue for Ballroom Dances to practice and enjoy their craft and passion of Ballroom Dancing
• Provide a venue for Ballroom Dancers to practices their social graces
• Provide a social environment to meet new dancing friends
• Promote a healthier lifestyle through the benefits of recreational Ballroom Dancing, which are:
• Accelerates the burning of calories by increasing our activities, thus increasing the circulation
• Keeps us young by slowing down the aging process benefiting our heart, cardiovascular system and increasing the lung capacity
• Aids in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis; and keeps joints lubricated to prevent arthritis
• Improves HDL and lowers LDL Cholesterol, and helps in controlling of blood sugars in diabetics
• Improves the ability to maintain balance and stabilizes our muscles making one less prone to injury
• Strengthen our reflexes, increases our muscle tone
• Keeps the Central Nervous System and Peripheral Nervous System in shape by connecting the body to the brain
• Ballroom Dancing is culturally diverse, dancers from various economic, ethnic, and sexual diversity all gather together for the purpose of dance
• Ballroom dancing promotes mental health by raising our endorphin levels, which allows improves stress and depression; and helps promote self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-discipline
• Ballroom Dancing improves harmony between our brain and body promoting a sense of well-being
