In 2008, gay/le***an marriage was voted as legal, by the California Supreme Court. However in November 2008, citizens of California passed Proposition 8, again making gay marriage illegal in California.

“8” is a dramatized reenactment of the subsequent lawsuit filed by four gay/le***an plaintiffs against California in the federal trial titled “Perry v. Schwarzenegger” (California's then-governor).

This federal trial, overturned California's Proposition 8 ban on gay/le***an marriage - ruling it in violation of the due process and equal protection clauses of the 14th amendment of the US Constitution - and thus constitutional.

Bring your straight friends who may be on the fence about gay/le***an marriage. The play will help them understand why a US federal district court judge, and subsequently the US federal ninth district court of appeals, both voted to overturn Proposition 8, making gay/le***an marriage once-again legal in California.

Although not portrayed in the play, this same case was recently appealed to the US Supreme Court on March 26th 2013, now titled “Hollingsworth v. Perry”. And a ruling is expected to be announced by the end of June 2013.

To be directed by Darren Nye, a reading of "8" (scripts in hand) about California's Proposition 8, and how it was ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge.

This reading is a re-enactment of what happened in the trial. It was created as a play, because the US Supreme Court upheld a request from the defendants (gay/le***an marriage opponents) that it not be broadcast to the public (the opponents were afraid public support would then lean toward the gay/le***an plaintiffs).

This same case is what just went to the US Supreme Court on March 26 2013. A decision is expected to be announced at the end of June 2013.

We are producing Mitch Albom's "And The Winner Is" at Villagers Theater. Tech week begins Oct 7th and the show is Oct 12-14 and 19-21. 7pm to 10pm most nights.

We are seeking a few volunteer Stage Hands. No experience necessary! It involves simple moving around of props at the right time. You just have to be able to commit to the above dates/times. Let me know if interested!
