Goatfeathers Studio Goatfeathers Studio is a mixed media and fiber arts space dedicated to both the creation and sharing

The purpose of the studio is to offer instruction for artists to learn new and exciting ways to work with textiles and mixed media applications. The owners, Celeste Beck, and her sister, Merri McKenzie, have had a lifelong interest in textiles. Both sisters grew up sewing and went on to enjoy careers in education. Now retired, the sisters have joined forces to share their enthusiasm for their love of textiles and mixed media.

Nancy Roberts was the guest speaker at the Lady of the Lake Quilters Guild on Wednesday. What a wonderful presentation. She has been a quilt magazine editor, proof reader, home economic teacher and of course the most creative person ever. She always gives everyone the disease “SEE IT WANT TO DO IT.” HER WORK IS AMAZING.

A dear friend of mine has passed away. She was an avid quilter until her health took a turn for the worse. I am trying to help the family.

Dave Cobb, Renee’s husband is selling her Solaris2 sewing/embroidery machine for $8,000. It is brand new. Never been used. In fact, it is still in the box with every goodie you can imagine. Usually these machines cost from $14,000 – $17,000 depending on where you buy.

I can vouch for this machine as Renee and I both bought our machines at the same time. Due health concerns, she was not able to get the machine up and running.

I entered a quilt into the American Quilt Socity show in Dayatona. It is titled “I Only Had One Crayon.”

I have worked five years to create this piece that incudes hand dyed (Procion) fabric, Indigo dyed, use of special Shibori techniques , potato stenciling, corn dextrin stenciling, glue resist and Cyanotype prints of the animals from Africa.

It included free motion, computerized quilting and ruler work. It is truly a culmination of many fiber art techniques.

I (Celeste) have been taking a 3 month long class on making feathers using my longarm machine. This is what I can now do. I have not mastered everything yet but I am learning so much. The class was taught by Bethann Nemesh White Arbor Quilting, Bethanne Nemesh. Love her teaching methods. One day I hope to win an prize for my feather quilting.

Painted Mat Workshop with Melissa and Dottie

Painted mats are heavy canvas painted with a pattern of your choice and sealed with polyurethane and backed with non-skid material for years of use. These mats are very durable and will last for years. Each participant will get a primed and hemmed 20 x 28 mat ready to stencil and paint.

Melissa and Dottie will demo the process of preparing the canvas at the start of the workshop. You can use the provided stencils or you can free-hand your pattern. Bring your own selection of acrylic paints. Sample paints from HomeDepot or Lowe’s can be purchased in custom colors for $4-$5. Since these samples are house paint they have the best coverage.

This is NOT a done-in-a-day project. You will take your unfinished mat home and upon completion arrangements can be made to have your piece finished with polyurethane and the backing done by Melissa and Dottie.

The class is limited to 6 participants.
