We wrapped up an incredible weeklong artist residency with the amazing Jessica Dickey last week. We’re already missing these moments! Huge thanks to Ms. Dickey for sharing her time, insight, and creativity with our students. As a writer and entertainment industry professional, she offered invaluable guidance and inspired us all. We’re deeply grateful to the David R. Hayworth School of Arts and Design, the Creative Arts Fellows, Dean Turpin, Doug Brown, Emily Gerhold, Janis Dougherty, Jesse Galas, and the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication for helping make this unforgettable week possible. 🙌

And exciting news: Ms. Dickey is joining the School of Arts and Design Advisory Board with us here at High Point University! We can’t wait to continue collaborating with this talented and innovative writer. 💫

Chithra Cijith, founder of Mudra Dance School in Winston-Salem, NC, is a distinguished Bharathanatyam and Mohiniyattam. Trained under renowned gurus, she has performed at prestigious venues including Guruvayoor’s Melpathur Auditorium and Koodalmanikyam Temple Utsav. Her contributions to classical dance have earned her the Kalathilakam title and the Nadanamanjari Puraskar.

We enjoyed and appreciated her thoughtful and insightful class! Thank you so much! 💕

Ashlee Dance came in to teach Professor Crofford’s Jazz/tap unit in Dance and Popular Culture. In the unit, students learn the history of the dance genre as they discussed how it connects to present day and pop culture. This class allowed students to learn from a working professional in dance and have a kinesthetic experience with the unit’s topic.

Ashlee Dance is a dance educator, choreographer, and interdisciplinary artist. She holds a BFA in Dance/Choreography from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2018) and an MFA in Choreography from the California Institute of the Arts (2022).d

We loved seeing Janice Lancaster in our Dance & Popular Culture class recently (10/17). She provided and expertly taught an energized introduction to practicing Modern/Contemporary movement approaches.

“Janice Lancaster performed internationally with Shen Wei Dance Arts from 2005 to 2019. As a choreographer, she has received commissions from Hubbard St. 2, VIA Dance Collaborative, the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center, Bard Music Festival, Bessie Schönberg Choreographer’s Residency on the Yard, Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center, and The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. Over the past several years, Janice has taught as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Hollins University and Elon University, Teacher-Scholar Postgraduate Fellow at Wake Forest University, and adjunct instructor at the University of the NC School of the Arts. She holds a MFA from Hollins University/American Dance Festival, a BFA from the University of NC School of the Arts, and certifications in Hatha and Restorative yoga.”

Join Us: November 19–20 with casting director Alison Franck as she visits campus for two exciting days of learning and connection!
* Wednesday, Nov. 19: Guest lectures in select classes.
* Thursday, Nov. 20: A two-hour Casting Workshop & Masterclass.

About the Masterclass: This two-hour masterclass will include a brief introduction of our Guest Artist, Alison Franck, followed by a breakdown of the casting director’s job and their criteria for a good audition, leading to audition technique and preparation: choosing a monologue, critical feedback on headshots/resumes (pre-submitted by the students), and self-taping do’s and don’ts. The students will present a mock audition with prepared materials and a live accompanist, which will be filmed, where Franck will give constructive criticism on performance, presentation, professionalism across live and filmed media. We will conclude the workshop with an Industry Q&A, discussing such topics as navigating a career in NYC, current marketing strategies, building good networking practices, and how to advocate for oneself in rapidly shifting times.
