“IT’S JUST LYING DOWN.”

Someone said it after their first restorative class.

A shrug.
A smirk.
Half question.

But in supported Supta Baddha Koṇāsana, much more may be happening than the eye can see.

A bolster supports the spine.
The shoulders release towards the floor.
The chest opens without force.
The breath gradually finds more room.

As unnecessary muscular effort quietens, the nervous system is given an opportunity to move towards rest and recovery.

The senses also begin to turn inward.

An eye cover.
A quiet room.
No screen to check.
Fewer instructions to follow.

These conditions can make pratyāhāra—the drawing inward of the senses—more accessible.

Restorative practice is not an absence of practice.

The props carry the body so that effort can become quieter, sensation can become clearer and the effects of the active practice can begin to settle.

The undoing is not lazy.

It is precise.
It is deliberate.

And sometimes, remaining still without distraction is more challenging than performing another pose.

What has restorative practice taught you that active practice never did?
Share your reflection below. We read every response.
