Jonathan Scales Fourchestra has never been easy to define and that is precisely what makes the group so compelling. The power trio of steel pan virtuoso Jonathan Scales, bassist E’Lon JD, and drummer Maison Guidry moves effortlessly between explosive musicianship and quiet, atmospheric moments that command complete attention. Blending elements of jazz, classical music, progressive rock, Latin rhythms, and deeply soulful funk, the Fourchestra creates a sound that is both technically remarkable and emotionally immersive.
The group has performed on club and festival stages throughout North America and Europe and has toured Africa, Southeast Asia, and Central Asia as a Cultural Ambassador for the U.S. Department of State. Their growing international presence has also included an NPR Tiny Desk Concert featuring Béla Fleck. Wherever they perform, Jonathan Scales Fourchestra delivers a live experience that is adventurous, unexpected, and difficult to categorize.
As the group approaches the release of its eighth studio recording, Jonathan Scales Fourchestra is also entering a new chapter. For many years, Scales’ live band featured a fluid roster of exceptional musicians, including an all-star lineup with bassist MonoNeon (Prince, Nas) drummer Sput Searight (Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg), and percussionist Weedie Braimah (Trombone Shorty, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah) along with numerous other celebrated players. Today, however, the Fourchestra has evolved into a firmly established trio.
With E’Lon JD and Maison Guidry alongside him, Scales is now composing specifically for the collective voice of the band rather than simply writing around the steel pans. The result is a more unified musical identity—one built on the individual strengths of three musicians whose chemistry, creativity, and willingness to push boundaries have made Jonathan Scales Fourchestra an unmistakable force of its own.
