The last few years have felt unstable when it comes to planning any event, and many folks are wondering about our annual event, Sweetgrass.

This event has been on my mind as the season is changing; fond memories of gathering with flute folks, playing music and sharing the voice of the land with all those who came together... This big pause and stillness have helped me recognize the opportunity and direction for Sweetgrass and I'd love to share my thoughts with you.

Will Sweetgrass continue?

Today would have been the first day of our 6th Annual Sweetgrass Flute School in Hiawatha, Iowa. I'm missing you all more than you know. It's hard not gathering together to make music, but you can still be a part of our Sweetgrass experience this year!

We are streaming an amazing concert at 6 p.m. CDT this coming Sunday (Sept 27). You can have a front row seat, even!

We will be taking donations to help support our artists this year and you can even purchase some from years past.

We miss you, we love you, and we can't wait to see you again when it's safe to gather again. :)

We have been involved in conversations with key people and parties involved with Sweetgrass. The common thread of our conversations has been that of risk vs. responsibility. We all feel the looming uncertainties, which make it very difficult to coordinate such an event as Sweetgrass this year. It is with a heavy heart that we announce the cancellation of in-person activities for Sweetgrass 2020.

This includes all in-person Flute School activities, Festival vendors, workshops and performances.

Greetings Friends of Sweetgrass,

We realize that we are in uncertain times which brings more questions than resolves. At this point, we are simply on pause. A decision will be made on whether or not to hold Sweetgrass activities this year by the middle of June. By that time, we should have a better idea of what we’re dealing with and how to appropriately respond.

It’s our responsibility to make an informed and educated decision and one that is also in alignment with Prairiewoods as they navigate new policies and safety measures. We are praying that can still gather in September. If you are making travel arrangements, please book with travel insurance just to be safe.

We are working behind the scenes on our “what if” plan and putting some new measures in place. As we have more information, we will let you know.

For now, join us in prayer and flute songs that we will be able to gather again at Sweetgrass in September.

Folks who have attended Sweetgrass may recognize this enthusiastic bundle of joy from the Prairiewoods kitchen known as Tara.

She shared more than good food with us, she shared her heart, smile and jokes.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of a friend of Sweetgrass and all-around good human being.

We love you, Tara! 💔
