Freenotes by Richard Cooke Freenotes music instruments are so easy to play they allow anyone to create enchanting music. Every sound is complimentary in a manner similar to an orchestra.

These beautifully designed percussion instruments are the perfect first instrument for both children and adults. Imagine stepping up to a musical instrument you have never played before and being able to make beautiful, rhythmic and melodic music right away, even if you have never played a musical instrument before. Now imagine the same experience while playing together with others on several different instruments all without musical training or direction of any kind. Grammy award winning musician Richard Cooke created Freenotes to assure musical success for all players. Freenotes use compatible major, minor and modal components extracted from the familiar C major scale.

Some instruments sparkle.
Some instruments sing.
And some seem to open a doorway into stillness.

The Freenotes Bass Wing has a voice all its own: deep, spacious, and beautifully sustained. Each strike blooms slowly into the surrounding space, allowing one tone to linger long enough to meet the next.

In this beautiful outdoor setting, the Bass Wing becomes part of the landscape itself, joining handpan, breath, birdsong, and the natural rhythm of the garden. There is something especially powerful about hearing these lower tones in an open space, where the resonance has room to travel.

Created by Richard Cooke, the Freenotes Wings are designed around intuitive musical exploration and rich tonal resonance. Whether they are being played by a seasoned sound practitioner or someone discovering them for the first time, they invite curiosity, listening, and connection.

A field of future frequencies.

New Freenotes Bells, freshly polished and gathered together before they make their way out into the world.

At first they are silent… circles of reflected light, each one waiting for the moment when a mallet sets the metal into motion.

Then the air changes.

One note blooms.
Another answers.
Overtones rise and linger.
What was still becomes vibration.

For decades, Richard Cooke has followed the possibilities hidden inside resonance, continually designing instruments that invite people to experience music through curiosity rather than complexity.

These Bells are another chapter in that exploration… handcrafted voices waiting to be awakened.

May they find their way into spaces where people gather, listen, breathe, create, and remember how good it feels to simply make something beautiful.

Fresh from the workshop… Freenotes Bells, all shined up and waiting to sing.

Before the first strike, there is already something beautiful about them. Dozens of polished forms catching the light, each one shaped with the promise of its own voice.

Then comes the mallet.

A single touch becomes tone.
Tone becomes resonance.
Resonance lingers long after the hand has moved away.

These new Bells are part of Richard Cooke’s continuing exploration of sound, form, tuning, and the simple human desire to make something beautiful ring out into the world.

From raw material to finished instrument, every Bell begins as an idea… and ends as an invitation to listen.

What happens when the freedom of a Freenotes Wing meets the entire chromatic spectrum?

Meet the Chromatic Freenotes Wing.

Created by Grammy-winning musician, inventor, and Freenotes founder Richard Cooke, this remarkable instrument expands the familiar Wing architecture into a full landscape of musical possibility.

Twenty-five resonant notes stretch from A3 to A5, with the natural notes and sharps and flats arranged in two complementary sections that nest together much like the keys of a piano.

And suddenly, the Wing speaks another language.

Melodies remembered from childhood.
Music read from a page.
Improvisations discovered in the moment.
Compositions that did not exist until the mallet touched the metal.

Each aluminum bar rings with the luminous sustain Freenotes instruments are known for, allowing individual notes to linger, overlap, and become part of something larger.

For decades, Richard has explored a beautiful question:

What if musical instruments invited us in rather than intimidated us?

The Chromatic Wing takes that invitation even further, offering experienced musicians a rich palette for composition while remaining wonderfully tactile and approachable for anyone curious enough to pick up the mallets and explore.

It is part instrument, part sculpture, part playground for sound.

From the Freenotes archives… Molas Pass, Colorado.

High in the San Juan Mountains, where alpine water mirrors the sky and the peaks rise into an almost impossible blue, Richard Cooke, creator and inventor of Freenotes, demonstrates something that has always been central to his work:

Music does not have to remain still.

With a Freenotes Wing in his hands, Richard can strike a note and then move with it… allowing the instrument to become part percussion, part movement, part dance. The tones ring outward while the body carries them through space, turning sound into something you can both hear and see.

There is something beautifully fitting about experiencing an instrument like this in a landscape so expansive.

Metal. Water. Wind. Mountains. Movement. Resonance.

The note begins with the mallet, but it does not end there. It lingers. It travels. It meets the open air and becomes part of everything surrounding it.

For decades, Richard has explored ways of redesigning musical instruments so that music becomes intuitive and accessible, creating instruments whose notes naturally harmonize and invite people to play without fear of getting it “wrong.”

Whether in the hands of an experienced musician, a sound practitioner, a child discovering an instrument for the first time, or the very person who imagined it into existence, Freenotes reminds us that music can be something we step into rather than something we simply perform.

And perhaps there is no better concert hall than the Earth herself.

A little rainbow magic meeting the resonance of the Freenotes Wave 🌈🌊

These beautiful bands of color are being cast by a crystal art piece nearby. When the sunlight hits its faceted pyramids just right, it scatters the light into this incredible spectrum across the Wave and surrounding space.

Sound, light, color, and resonance all meeting in one moment. ✨

The aftermath of chimes in the rain…

Richard Cooke, creator and inventor behind Freenotes, surrounded by one of the most elemental things he knows how to work with: resonance.

These towering chimes are built to ring far beyond the initial strike, sending long, sustained tones into the surrounding space. There is something almost architectural about them. You don’t simply hear the sound, you experience the way it expands, lingers, overlaps, and slowly disappears into the air.

Richard has spent decades exploring how shape, material, tuning, and resonance can transform an instrument into an experience. From the familiar Freenotes Waves and Wings to bells, chimes, and larger custom sound installations, his work continues to push the boundaries of what an intuitive musical instrument can be.

Not every instrument Richard creates becomes part of the standard Freenotes collection. Some remain experimental, one-of-a-kind, or are created for particular spaces and projects. For the right person, venue, or vision, custom possibilities may also be worth exploring.

After the rain passes, the chimes keep singing.

I have enough.
I do enough.
I am enough.

Sometimes a few simple words, paired with a moment of resonance, are enough to bring us back to ourselves.

The Freenotes Wave was created to make beautiful, harmonious sound accessible through intuitive play. Strike it, move it through the air, listen as the tones sustain and gently warble through space, and allow the sound to become part of the moment.

Created by Grammy-winning musician and inventor Richard Cooke, Freenotes instruments are designed around a beautifully simple idea: you don’t have to be a trained musician to make music that feels good.

High in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, surrounded by alpine forest, sweeping peaks, and the wild beauty of Lizard Head Pass, music began moving from hand to hand.

At nearly 10,000 feet, the Four Corners Mycological Society gathered for a weekend devoted to fungi, forest, community, exploration, and connection. Richard Cooke, creator of Freenotes, generously sponsored our gathering and joined us in person, bringing an incredible collection of Freenotes instruments for everyone to experience.

Throughout the gathering, instruments were passed from person to person, inviting spontaneous moments of music throughout the mountains. Here, several of them make their way around the group, including one of the beautiful Freenotes Waves, its sustained tones bending and warbling as it moves through the open air.

There is something extraordinary about hearing these resonant instruments at elevation, their sound carrying out beneath an enormous mountain sky, mingling with wind through the trees, conversation, laughter, and the natural soundscape around us.

And that is part of what makes Freenotes so special. You don't have to consider yourself a musician to participate.

The instruments are designed around harmonious scales, allowing people with completely different levels of musical experience to pick up a mallet, explore, listen to one another, and create music together.

For a mycological community already gathered around curiosity, interconnectedness, and the natural world, it felt beautifully fitting.

Thank you, Richard Cooke and Freenotes, for sponsoring our gathering, showing up in person, and bringing so much sound, play, and possibility into the mountains with us.
