Brian Trekell was backpacking through Japan when he was first inspired by the art of brushmaking. That spark led to an interest that blossomed into a passion. Soon after, he traveled to Bechhofen, Germany to fine-tune his skills. After mastering the discipline, he returned to America and began his business, one with a commitment to excellence that deserved to be given his name. Things started small: Brian used his Brea, California apartment as the first base of operations. He worked hard, never forgetting his original inspiration and to always put quality first. The company grew steadily and he moved to California's spacious High Desert to accommodate it. Three decades later, Trekell is an established name in art, known for exacting standards, earned experience, and the virtuosic skill behind the design of every product. Who says watercolor has to stay on paper?

Trekell Pro Team Artist Mallory Hart took her watercolor paper and mounted it to one of our Coffin Block Panels, giving her the surface she loves to paint on with a completely different way to display the finished piece.

She also shows how she adheres the paper, trims it to fit, and seals the finished painting.

We put together a step-by-step guide covering her process if you've ever wanted to try something similar.

Have you ever picked up two synthetic brushes that looked almost exactly the same, but felt completely different once you started painting?

There’s actually a lot more going on in those little fibers than you might think. The taper, texture, thickness and spring of the filament can all change how a brush holds paint, moves across the surface and responds to your hand.

We took a closer look at what actually makes a good synthetic brush and what to pay attention to when you’re choosing one.

Two panels. One story.

Our Diptych + Triptych Panels are back for October, and Trekell Pro Team Artist Danica Sills shows just how much you can do with more than one surface.

For her diptych, Danica created two paintings that can stand on their own but become a larger story when viewed together. She used composition, symmetry, value and repeated elements to connect the two sides, even considering the space between the panels as part of the finished piece.

It’s here. The Alai Ganuza x Trekell Painting Kit is officially available.

We worked with Alai to create a limited edition kit built around the tools she personally uses in her oil painting process. She chose the four Trekell brushes, the custom handle colors, the Gamblin Raymond Style Palette Knife and even designed the collector box herself.

We also created a custom 3oz Linseed Oil Soap with a scrubber built right into the lid for cleanup.

This exact collection is exclusive to Alai’s kit and available in limited quantities while supplies last.

Now that we’ve shared all of our 2026 Pet Portrait Competition winners, we want to say something to everyone who entered.

Hundreds of artists participated this year, and choosing the winners is incredibly difficult. There are always more pieces we want to recognize than there are awards to give.

Art is personal. A piece that immediately connects with one person may not be the one another person chooses. If we had a completely different group of judges, we’d probably have a different group of winners.

So if your piece wasn’t selected this year, please don’t let that change how you feel about what you created. And if you did win, we hope you’re incredibly proud of that accomplishment.

To every artist who painted a panel, tried something new, put your work out there and shared it with us: thank you.

We hope we’ll see your art again next year. ❤️
