Happy World Parrot Day! 🦜

ZooAmerica keeps four thick-billed parrots in an outdoor aviary in the Great Southwest region.
🌲 These endangered parrots used to range through southern areas of Arizona & New Mexico. Deforestation has taken them further south to Mexico.
❄️ They live in high elevation forests and can tolerate cold weather. Our flock lives outdoors all year long!
⬆️ As of November 2024, the wild population has increased by 20%!

Did you know that there are 14 otter species found worldwide!? 🤯 And this year marks the 10th annual world otter day celebration! 🎉

River otters have some fascinating superpowers to help them navigate and survive in their ecosystem 🦸 They have a long, tapered tail that makes up over 40% of their total body length. They use this to help them swim up to 6mph. Believe it or not they can run on land even faster, reaching speeds of 15 mph! 🤯 They possess a third eyelid or nictitating membrane, which are their very own built in swim goggles 🥽 River otters are also able to close off their nostrils when they dive in the water. This allows them to swim as deep as 60 feet and to hold their breath for up to 8 minutes 🏊

Happy World Turtle Day from Software, the Eastern box turtle! Box turtles are one of Pennsylvania’s 14 native turtle species 🐢

Turtles and tortoises are famous for their protective shells, but box turtles take this further. They earned their name because they can pull in their limbs and close their shell, just like a box! 📦

Wild turtles and tortoises are essential to their ecosystems. Gopher and desert tortoises dig burrows that provide shelter for other animals 🤩While box turtles don’t dig such burrows, they help their own ecosystem by eating fruit from plants such as mayapples, which spreads seeds
and helps new plants grow! 🌱

Each day during summer, ZooAmerica hosts a tortoise graze from 2:30-3pm! Feel free to stop by to learn more about our shelled friends as they walk around outside 🐢
