Our three grey wolves got in on the International Dog Day festivities with some Dog Days of Summer themed enrichment, including scented play sand, a cardboard sun and a paper mache bone 🤩 This gives them opportunities to explore, investigate, and engage in natural behaviors.
From wagging tails to wild instincts, there is a whole lot to celebrate about the amazing canine family! 🐺

Today we’re celebrating all things dog - from the beloved pups who live at home with our staff to the wild canids who call our zoo home! 🤩

And yes…wolves belong to the same family as dogs, too! - Canidae 🐺 In fact, our modern domestic dogs share an ancient ancestor with gray wolves. So while a wolf may not be the kind of canine you’d invite onto the couch, they’re still part of the canine family! 🤯

Let's talk about training! 💪

A big job for all of our keepers is training our animals! From lizards to mountain lions, we work hard to provide training opportunities for all of our animals! 😁

Why is training important? 🤔
Animals are always learning, just like us! 🎓 They can learn from keepers, other zoo staff, and even guests just like you! Here are some reasons why we train:

💪 It helps build stronger relationships between animals and keepers
⚕️ It can help reduce stress in situations like medical procedures
🤔 It can be stimulating and keep them thinking
🐢 It helps allow for choice programming - allowing the animal to choose to participate
🦉 It can help keep the animal safe while on a program
🐺 It can allow for easier husbandry practices for the animal
🦎 It can allow for in depth wellness checks
🐻 It can reward an animal for shifting from one area of their habitat to another
😁 and so much more!
