In 1784 a Virginian surveyor named Daniel Smith moved with his family to the Cumberland Settlement in present-day Middle Tennessee and began construction on a limestone, Federal-Style building that would house generations of the Smith family for almost 200 years! Located next to a Cumberland River tributary called Drake’s Creek, the house was built on part of the 3,140 acres that Daniel Smith rece

ived in land grants for his service in the Revolutionary War and his surveying work. Over the course of a decade, the Smiths constructed their home in three phases resulting in the story-filled, multi-cultural historic house that stands today. General Daniel Smith was a trailblazer, successful surveyor of Tennessee who named the state of Tennessee, a Revolutionary War patriot, Native American Indian negotiator, two-time Senator and one of the greatest Tennesseans of that era.

On September 19, you won’t have to imagine what life on the Tennessee frontier looked like. You’ll be surrounded by it. 🏰

For one day, Living History Festival brings the grounds of Historic Rock Castle to life with the people, skills, sounds, and traditions of the 18th century.

Watch sparks fly as a blacksmith works. Meet a longhunter and fur trader. See the careful work behind lace-making, paper filigree, natural wool dyeing, and weaving. Spend time with goats, chickens, and sheep, hear period music, and even learn a few steps from an 18th-century dance.

Everywhere you turn, there will be another piece of history to see, hear, and experience.

It’s hands-on, it’s family-friendly, and it’s a chance for kids and adults alike to discover that history is about so much more than dates in a textbook.

Come spend the day with us and see 1784 come alive at Rock Castle.

We promised you one more headliner. Here they are!🪕🔥

The Del McCoury Band is headlining the 9th Annual Rock Castle Bluegrass Jam! 🎶🏰

For more than six decades, Del McCoury has helped carry bluegrass from one generation to the next. From joining Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in 1963 to becoming a member of the Grand Ole Opry, a two-time Grammy winner, and a 10-time IBMA Entertainer of the Year, Del isn’t simply part of bluegrass history...he has helped write it.

Alongside sons Ronnie and Rob McCoury, The Del McCoury Band has introduced generations of listeners to the power of traditional bluegrass while collaborating with artists far beyond the genre; from Vince Gill and Alison Krauss to Steve Earle, Phish, Dierks Bentley, and Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

Now, that unmistakable sound is coming to Historic Rock Castle.

There’s something pretty special about welcoming an artist who has spent his life preserving a musical tradition to a place that has spent more than 240 years preserving stories of its own.

And on September 25 & 26, those stories come together. 🪕✨

We’re thrilled to welcome The Travelin' McCourys to Rock Castle this September!

Brothers Ronnie and Rob McCoury were quite literally raised in bluegrass. As the sons of legendary musician Del McCoury, they spent years on the road with the Del McCoury Band, learning from one of the genre’s most influential musicians while discovering how those traditions could be carried somewhere entirely new.

Today, Ronnie on mandolin and Rob on banjo are joined by Christian Ward on fiddle, Alan Bartram on bass, and Cody Kilby on guitar. Together, they’ve created a sound that honors bluegrass history without being confined by it, bringing influences from rock, R&B, jam music, and beyond into some seriously impressive picking.

That adventurous approach has taken them to stages and collaborations alongside The Allman Brothers Band, Phish, Dierks Bentley, Keller Williams, The String Cheese Incident, and more. They’re also the creators of the Grateful Ball, bringing the music of the Grateful Dead together with their unmistakable bluegrass sound.

And the talent on that stage runs deep: every member of the band has been recognized with an International Bluegrass Music Association Award for their instrument at least once.

As Ronnie McCoury says, "A good song is a good song. It can be done in any way.”

That balance of tradition and innovation feels right at home at Rock Castle, and we cannot wait to hear what The Travelin’ McCourys bring to the lawn. 🏰🎶
