Artist Education Initiative, Article III

Some helpful advice for Smooth Jazz musicians, according to Gorov Music:

1. Own your music, and control it. We don’t see any other universe where creators shouldn’t own 100% of the music they create.

2. Build a catalog of your music over time, register it properly and market it well. In 25 years, it might be worth a lot of $$.

3. Diversify your marketing. There are several important pieces of the music marketing puzzle. We often compare radio airplay and charting to the border of the puzzle, as the remaining pieces fall into place once the border is established. This is especially important for Smooth Jazz artists. Social media, PR/publicity, tour support, lifestyle marketing, playlist promotion and more all represent the remaining pieces of the puzzle.

4. Vet your marketing team. Unfortunately, there are vultures everywhere in our otherwise fabulous business of music. Look for proven, verifiable results over time.

5. Don’t lose sight of the fact that you are not only a musician; you’re also an entertainer, performer, comedian, vocalist, instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, mixing engineer, social media director, record label owner, radio show host, and more. This is a tough business to navigate! It’s important to surround yourself with strong management, or other experienced individuals, who can help oversee all aspects of your career as a Smooth Jazz musician. It’s very important to be honest with yourself, find your strengths and then delegate the things you’re not great at.

When contemporary jazz saxophonist Matt Willard landed at LAX last month to work with two-time Grammy winning producer Paul Brown, he arrived as the artist he had always been. A week later, he flew home with 2 finished tracks… and a new name: Cali Jones.

Becoming Cali Jones isn’t a marketing ploy or a rebrand, but an identity shift years in the making. Growing up in Virginia, Willard was captivated by the smooth, soulful sound of the west coast. The music of Boney James, Richard Elliot, Peter White, Rick Braun, and other California greats is what shaped his imagination.

Encouraged and eager to break through the next level, Willard reached out to Brown, the producer behind more than 80 no. 1 Smooth Jazz hits, many from the very California artists who inspired him, and Brown agreed to meet. What Matt didn’t expect was a transformation that went far beyond the music. As the two worked together, Paul began calling him “Cali” casually at first. “It felt natural. It felt right,” Willard recalled. A few days later, Brown posed a question that shifted everything, “Why don’t we start from scratch? Not just your sound… your whole persona.”

Willard sat with it, “I thought about the doors I wanted to walk through. The stages I wanted to stand on. The artist I was becoming, not just the one I had been. So in that moment, I made a choice, not just to change a name, but to claim an identity. From that moment on, I was no longer just dreaming of the west coast sound… I WAS the west coast sound. I became Cali Jones.”

Jones returned home with two fully produced tracks from Paul Brown, including his next release, “Midnight Strut”. Brown plays guitar on the track, which he co-wrote with Buddy Jordan (bass, keyboards, drum programming). Ron King guests on flugelhorn.

“Midnight Strut” is an energetic, yet silky Smooth Jazz groove that channels the unmistakable moods of the Quiet Storm era. Built with late-night elegance and rhythmic drive, the track blends lush melodies with a confident pulse designed to keep listeners locked in from the first note.

"Shine A Little Love" brings saxophonist Fabian Chavez back to the roots of groove with a vibrant, old-school Hugh Masekela vibe. Driven by infectious percussion, swirling keys, and swampy guitars, the track leans into a sun-drenched retro feel while pushing forward with modern polish. Chavez layers bold sax stacks that crackle with energy, creating a soulful anthem that feels both nostalgic and fresh. "Shine A Little Love" is a deep cut built for movement, spirit, and sheer musical joy.

As a Songwriter/Producer, Greg Freeman’s passion and artistic creativity have their origins in the heart of Detroit. His introduction to the industry came through his father, the late Sonny Freeman, former percussionist for Bluesmaster B.B. King. Greg developed and fine-tuned his skills at Howard University, where he also held a weekly DJ slot on Howard University radio, now WHBC 96.3 HD3 Washington D.C., and was a guest DJ on the illustrious Electrifying Mojo’s radio show on WHYT 96.3 Detroit.

In 2024, Greg co-wrote "Promises” with Randy Scott for his album Oasis. After several years of working on industry projects, Greg will return to his roots, releasing his third solo album Journey in 2026, featuring several artists through his production company GERG. The lead single from the project is titled “Appreciation”, produced by Randy Scott, and featuring bassist Robert Skinner.

Artist Education Initiative - Episode II

In 2026, Smooth Jazz cannot be heard on FM radio in the following markets: NY, LA, SD, CHI, PHI, SF, SEA, DAL, MIA, and more.

However, the legacy for Smooth Jazz created by stations like KIFM/San Diego, CD101/NY, WNUA/Chicago, WJJZ/Philadelphia, and many more is still strong in those markets today. Several passionate individuals and institutions have contributed to keeping their SJ communities vibrant; 3 specific examples include Rick O’Dell in Chicago, Kelly Cole in San Diego, and Michael Tozzi in Philadelphia. Spaghettini Fine Dining & Entertainment restaurant in Los Angeles, which features live performances from several top SJ artists, embodies the Smooth Jazz lifestyle better than anywhere we’ve seen – and their food is killer, too. Art Good’s Jazz Trax Festival on Catalina Island in October is iconic; Berks Jazz Fest is a legendary festival on the East Coast, attracting an estimated 30,000 Jazz lovers each year. Seabreeze Jazz Festival has contributed to the popularity of the genre across the entire state of Florida, not to mention southern Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. The 2026 festival will be their 27th Anniversary. The festival is sold out to capacity at 8000 people per day...with an expanded lineup of over 35 artists featured, and almost 200 total musicians performing.

The legacy of SJ in those markets and others, is proven by sold-out artist performances, Jazz Festivals, Jazz Cruises and more. Passionate fans still love to hear and see their favorite musicians perform live, even with no FM station in their market; these music lovers are listening to their favorite Smooth Jazz artists on SiriusXM Satellite Radio/Watercolors, Music Choice/SJ TV channel, multiple radio networks delivered across multiple platforms, nationally/internationally syndicated specialty shows, literally hundreds of online/streaming radio stations just a few keyboard clicks away, and via mobile apps like iHeart Radio, Live365 and others. Ironically, there are more listening platforms for Smooth Jazz on the radio today than ever before.

While some in the industry have been spreading the ‘SJ RADIO IS DEAD’ agenda for years now, we at Gorov Music would argue that Smooth Jazz radio, across all its platforms in 2026, is exactly what’s sustaining our genre.

Please keep comments/feedback professional and respectful.

Ugandan-born soprano saxophonist Isaiah Katumwa is recognized as one of Africa’s pioneering Smooth Jazz voices. Known for his Afro–Smooth Jazz signature sound, expressive melodic phrasing, and inspirational tone, his music is both technically refined and emotionally uplifting- paralleling a life shaped by perseverance and purpose.

Now, after a meaningful season of reflection and recalibration, Isaiah returns with a powerful new single titled “New Days”.

“New Days” is an uplifting, forward-looking single that captures renewal, resilience, and fresh beginnings. With soaring soprano sax melodies layered over rich keys and polished contemporary production from multi-time #1 hitmaker Greg Manning, the record blends emotional depth with a radio-friendly groove, making it perfect for Smooth Jazz playlists worldwide.

Steve Bach & Alisha Pattillo unite two distinctive musical voices in a new Smooth Jazz collaboration that blends world-class artistry with a deep groove. Driven by commanding keys and fearless saxophone, their sound is designed for listeners who crave depth, edge and intention.

Bach is an internationally acclaimed keyboardist, composer, and musical director. His decades of global experience includes work with Stanley Clarke, Sérgio Mendes, Richard Elliot, The Rippingtons, Kitaro, Airto Moreira & Flora Purim, Robby Krieger, and Cirque du Soleil. He is also a co-writer of Empire of the Sun’s EDM hit single “Alive.” It was named one of Rolling Stone’s 100 best songs and has over 370 million streams on Spotify.

On tenor sax is Alisha Pattillo, a dynamic and expressive artist known for her full-bodied tenor tone and commanding musical presence. Her career spans Jazz, Soul, R&B, and Blues. Pattillo recently performed with The Tina Turner Musical, and has appeared at international festivals including Umbria Jazz in Italy and the Tulsa International Jazz Festival. Gorov Music is excited to announce the launch of our Artist Education Initiative (AEI), which seeks to educate Smooth Jazz recording artists, and anyone in the Smooth Jazz community who would like to learn more. The goal is to help artists make the most informed choices for marketing their music. Our first installment explores radio promotion, clears up some of the misconceptions, and compares professional RP to one-time song delivery.

Radio airplay is often compared to the border of the music marketing puzzle; the other pieces fall into place more easily once the border is established. We’ll dive deeper into the value of radio airplay and charting in a later installment, but first we’d like to clarify the many platforms of radio for Smooth Jazz in 2026. Currently, we promote music over 200 broadcasting platforms (radio stations) around the globe: FM/AM radio, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Music Choice/TV channel, College radio, multiple radio networks, nationally/internationally syndicated specialty shows, literally hundreds of online/streaming radio stations just a few keyboard clicks away, and mobile apps like iHeart Radio, Live365 and others.

Reputable radio promoters (RP’s), either record label promotion reps or ‘indie’ promoters like GMM, are a vital marketing resource across all formats of music, none more than the Smooth Jazz genre. But unfortunately, the images we’ve seen in films over the years, with promo reps making dark backroom hush-hush cash payments to radio stations/DJ’s, have cast a negative shadow over the profession. The goals for all RP’s in 2026, across all genres of music, are attaining maximum airplay and national charting for the artists and record labels we represent.

A radio promoter normally has years of experience working in music. While most have worked at record labels previously, some come from radio, and some are creators as well. Radio promoters have developed strong relationships – in many cases friendships – with the station music directors, program directors, DJ’s, station managers, marketing/promotions directors, and more over the years. They have come to expect good music from us, there’s a symbiotic relationship built on respect, professionalism – and ears. Most reputable RP’s maintain a very high standard for the songs we promote. After all, our reputation is on the line with every song we present to our friends at radio.

RP for artists signed to record labels is generally handled internally (by the labels themselves), with an occasional dip into indie RP, mostly for smaller or artist-owned labels. Indie RP’s are potentially available to promote music for any/all Smooth Jazz artists, for a fee. How much does it cost? Most SJ RP’s charge $300 - 400/week, with additional discount options for longer campaigns (prices may vary, contact your RP for details). We do not get paid on a per-station basis, we are paid a retainer for our overall services. Keep in mind, quality is of the utmost importance, especially in a highly competitive promotional environment like Smooth Jazz radio.

There are other amazing indie radio promotion professionals in our genre, including Adam Leibovitz (who worked with The Gorovs from 1998 until our move to Las Vegas in 2003), Bud Harner, David (Dave) Kunert, and Kim Giles/Neal Sapper, all of whom we’ve known for 25+ years. Although we don’t know Lynda Penn personally, we know she does a great job too as we’ve seen the results she delivers. These marketing professionals are the best options for SJ artists looking for maximum exposure for their music, across multiple platforms of broadcasting. You can find all RP’s named here on Facebook. Although we all haven’t seen eye to eye on everything over the years, there’s one thing we all have in common – our passion for Smooth Jazz. Due to the popularity of our radio promotion services, our company release schedules may be filled weeks or months in advance. It’s important for artists to reach out to RP’s to schedule releases far in advance, while getting their ‘ducks in a row’ during this interim period.

How do radio promoters deliver music to the stations? We make it as easy as possible for our radio friends. First, we hand-craft a dynamic email blast, which is distributed to over 200 broadcasting platforms (radio stations) weekly (sometimes twice). These blasts contain download links for high-res, lossless WAV files, 320kbps mp3 with full metadata added by us, cover art, bio/one sheet, photos and more. What’s metadata? We’ll discuss later but it’s just a fancy name for artist name, song title, composers, ISRC code, etc.

Next, we add all of our music to our online Dropbox, where our radio friends can easily download the assets mentioned. We normally keep 4-5 months of our releases active in Dropbox. Also, to the delight of many, we no longer ask our artists to manufacture or mail CD’s to radio. We have discovered a cost effective way to deliver CD’s ourselves to the stations who request or require it, at no additional cost to artists.

Following the initial distribution of our music, we then follow up with our friends at radio weekly during the radio campaign window via phone, email, text message, in person, or all of those - urging the stations to play and play and play it more!

There are several marketing companies who claim they ‘cover’ radio, but instead simply send a one-time email to stations, with no follow-up. Not even a ‘please listen’. Which is exactly what a radio promoter does.
