The finish changes the image. Not just how it looks on the wall. How the tones separate, how the aluminum reads through.

We print ChromaLuxe HD aluminum panels on the Epson F6470 with UltraChrome DS inks in a six-color configuration. Light Cyan and Light Magenta run alongside standard CMYK and black for smooth tonal transitions across skin and sky. The dye sublimates into the polymer coating under heat and pressure. The image sits inside the panel.

Five finishes. Each one shifts the read.

White Gloss delivers full density and specular highlights. The most color. Matte White holds the same density without the reflection. Clear Gloss prints with no white base so the aluminum shows through transparent areas of the file. That is why it suits high-contrast black and white. The metallic lift lives in the highlights. Matte Clear is the same logic without the specular pop. White Gloss EXT is outdoor-rated for five-plus years of direct sunlight. For exterior installs where gloss and durability both matter.

The trade-off, stated once: on a very dark low-key image a high-gloss finish can swallow the most subtle shadow separation. Clear Gloss or fine art paper will hold more of that quiet detail.

Before we print your file, we check the histogram. Not for you. For the paper.

German Etching is a 310 GSM heavyweight matte cotton surface with a coarse tooth. It holds ink differently than smooth papers. The texture breaks up tonal transitions in a way that makes black-and-white work read with more dimension.

We run it on the Epson SureColor P20570 with twelve-color UltraChrome PRO12 pigment. The extended gamut gives us more tonal steps between shadows and midtones. On a textured matte surface, that translates to depth you can see at arm's length.

The honest trade-off: if your client wants color that pops or glow under a spotlight, paper is the wrong call. That is a metal or acrylic conversation. But if the image needs to hold detail in the shadows without going flat, this surface does that work.

Black-and-white photographers know: the paper is half the image. Tyler prints his entire portfolio on German Etching.

He sent us a note last month: "I need the surface to hold shadow detail without going flat. German Etching does that. The texture reads in person but it doesn't fight the composition."

He's right. The 310-gram cotton base holds ink differently than smooth papers. Blacks stay dense. Mid-tones separate. The matte surface doesn't reflect gallery lighting back into the frame, so the tonal range stays intact from any viewing angle.

This is what twelve-color UltraChrome PRO12 pigment ink was built for. The Violet channel extends the gamut into deep shadow transitions that four-color presses can't touch. On a textured matte cotton like German Etching, that translates to prints that look like they were made in a darkroom, not on a screen.

Here's the honest trade-off: if you want color that pops or glow under a spotlight, paper is the wrong call. That's a metal or acrylic conversation. But if the image lives in the mid-tones and the shadows, and your client is going to stand six inches away and study it, this is the surface.

Most photographers think paper prints lack impact. They're looking at the wrong paper with the wrong image.

Paper doesn't glow. It doesn't reflect. And that's exactly why it works for black-and-white and tonal work.

When you remove color from an image, you're asking the viewer to read light, shadow, and texture. A reflective surface competes with that. Metal bounces light back at the viewer. Acrylic adds its own depth. Paper gets out of the way.

We print Fine Art Paper on the Epson SureColor P20570 with twelve-color UltraChrome PRO12 pigment. The extra ink channels matter most in the midtones. That's where monochrome images live or die.

A cluster isn't always better than one large panel. Here's when it is and when it isn't.

If the image has a strong central subject, one large metal print usually wins. The eye needs uninterrupted space to travel across the composition. Breaking it into pieces fragments the visual narrative. The subject loses its anchor.

But if you're working with a series, a cluster becomes the better tool. Six metal prints at 1 inch spacing read as one luminous installation, not six separate decisions. We sand every corner by hand. Not because it's faster. Because a machine can't feel when birch is ready.

Heritage Wood prints start as fine art paper and three-quarter inch white birch. The paper goes down first. Then UV lamination. Then the piece moves to the finishing bench.

That's where the corners get rounded. By hand. With 220-grit paper. The person doing it can feel grain direction, can stop before the bevel goes too deep, can match the curve on all four sides without a jig.

Frames are built in-house. The wood substrate is white birch for both Heirloom and Legacy finishes. Every corner is hand-sanded with rounded edges. Production takes four to five business days in our Henderson, Nevada facility because this step can't be rushed.

The wood has to be right before it leaves the bench.

Most photographers think grain-through is a defect. It's a design choice. Here's when to use it and when not to.

Heritage Wood prints are fine art paper mounted directly to white birch wood. The wood grain shows through lighter areas of the image. That means warm, natural, rustic work looks right at home. Family sessions in golden light, outdoor portraits, earthy tones. The grain adds depth to the final piece.

But high-key studio work, clean white backgrounds, clinical product photography? Wrong surface. The grain fights the image. If you shoot bright and clean, metal or framed fine art paper is the better call.

The finish matters too. Heirloom gets UV lamination with hand-sanded corners and beveled edges. Legacy uses Fine Art Luster with rounded corners and straight edges. Both are mounted and finished in Henderson, Nevada. Every corner is hand-sanded. Production runs four to five business days.
