✨Deconstructing Venus✨

The ancient Roman goddess Venus represented love, fertility, and desire. Viewed as the divine mother of Rome, both men and women worshipped Venus for assistance in various areas, including military success and marriage. After the fall of the Roman Empire, depictions of Venus waned until the Renaissance, where her image was revived in the service of art and has since remained a central figure in Western art history. Youthful, beautiful, coy, available, and maternal, Venus has been more than just a religious and artistic symbol but an ideal projected onto women for thousands of years.

Despite countless depictions of female figures in Western art, women were barred from formal artistic careers. Modernity led to the reevaluation of women’s roles in society, and with it came a pathway for women to participate in the fine arts without male oversight for the first time. Deconstructing Venus is a presentation of art made by women in the 20th and 21st centuries, an era in Western art history that reflects firsthand experiences of women based on their varied personal perspectives.

🌈 Each artist represented in Deconstructing Venus engages with ancient notions of womanhood, whether by subverting gender norms, embracing traditional values, or confronting the limitations imposed upon them in a male-dominated world. The diverse voices in the exhibition invite exploration of beauty, intergenerationality, activism, and life events across all ages.

🙌 Artists in Deconstructing Venus include Lee Krasner, Käthe Kollwitz, Elizabeth Catlett, Marisol, Lori Horowitz, Dee Shapiro, and Susan Grabel as the exhibition’s featured contemporary artist. Examples of non-Western art on display further demonstrate how women outside Europe and North America, facing similar social expectations, have approached the exhibition's themes.

👋As we deinstall “Our Unfinished Revolution(s)”, we’re reflecting on visitor participation at our ✨Wish Wall✨ that amassed nearly 🖊️200 total responses, where guests shared their wishes for the United States 🇺🇸 as we commemorate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

🧐 The U.S. Semiquincentennial has not only been an opportunity to reflect on the past, but also a rare chance to collectively consider our legacy. Over the course of the exhibition, visitors posted thoughtful messages of hope, community care, and a willingness to understand one another. 🫶

Here were some of the wishes that museum visitors wrote in 2026 for future generations!

“Our Unfinished Revolution(s)” is an exhibition presented during the U.S. Semiquincentennial commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Hofstra University Museum of Art will offer visitors an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s history and consider its future by engaging with art that poses questions about the founding document’s historical legacy.

The signers of the Declaration of Independence risked their lives in fighting for the notion of self-government. As the newly formed United States developed, however, questions and contradictions emerged about who could participate in the country’s democracy. Despite their involvement in and proximity to the American Revolution, women, Indigenous peoples, Black Americans, and immigrants all needed to fight for equality within our system of government.

The art in “Our Unfinished Revolution(s)”demonstrates how the Declaration’s promises of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness have been challenged since 1776. Archival materials from the Hofstra University Library’s Special Collections help contextualize the historic moments in which the artwork was created. The exhibition pays homage to those who have maintained the spirit of the American Revolution by patriotically assessing our shared definition of liberty so that its great promise could be realized by all.

Some artists represented include William Hogarth, Alexander Calder, Faith Ringgold, Larry Rivers, and the work of Jeremy Dennis as the exhibition’s featured contemporary artist.

“Our Unfinished Revolution(s)” is exhibited in conjunction with “Untold Stories of Revolution: A Hofstra University Initiative for the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution.”

A Message from the Director

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and gather with family and friends this Fourth of July, I am reminded that democracy is not only something we inherit; it is something we practice together.

Museums are vital “third spaces” where people from all backgrounds come together to learn, reflect, ask questions, and engage in meaningful dialogue. They are places where history, creativity, and community intersect, reminding us that democracy flourishes when every voice has the opportunity to be heard and seen.

Our exhibition, Our Unfinished Revolution(s), demonstrates the power of collaboration. Our deepest thanks to the artists, scholars, community partners, lenders, educators, students, and visitors who contributed their honesty, creativity, and diverse perspectives. Together, you proved that collaboration is revolutionary and that our collective stories create a richer, more inclusive understanding of our shared history.

Wishing everyone a joyful and safe Fourth of July. Let’s celebrate the spirit of freedom, civic responsibility, and the importance of self-government!

Artist Scherezade Garcia visited the Hofstra University Museum of Art today to see the current exhibition “Our Unfinished Revolution(s)”, which includes her painting America: Borders and Fireworks. She is a painter, printmaker, and installation artist whose work frequently explores the themes of migration, colonization, history, and memory.

Come by the Museum to see this and other works presented in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.

“Our Unfinished Revolution(s)” is on view through July 24th, 2026.
