“Our Unfinished Revolution(s)” is an exhibition presented during the U.S. Semiquincentennial commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The signers of the Declaration of Independence risked their lives in fighting for the notion of self-government.

As the newly formed United States developed, however, questions and contradictions emerged about who could participate in the country’s democracy. Despite their involvement in and proximity to the American Revolution, women, Indigenous peoples, Black Americans, and immigrants all needed to fight for equality within our system of government.

The art in “Our Unfinished Revolution(s)”demonstrates how the Declaration’s promises of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness have been challenged since 1776. Archival materials from the Hofstra University Library’s Special Collections help contextualize the historic moments in which the artwork was created. The exhibition pays homage to those who have maintained the spirit of the American Revolution by patriotically assessing our shared definition of liberty so that its great promise could be realized by all.

Some artists represented include William Hogarth, Alexander Calder, Faith Ringgold, Larry Rivers, and the work of Jeremy Dennis as the exhibition’s featured contemporary artist.

“Our Unfinished Revolution(s)” is exhibited in conjunction with “Untold Stories of Revolution: A Hofstra University Initiative for the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution.”

🖼️ It’s International Museum Day!

Since 1977, the International Council of Museums has been organzing IMD with the following goal in mind:

👉 “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.” In 2025, more than 37,000 museums participated, including 158 countries and territories.

This year’s theme, ✨Museums uniting a divided world,✨ “highlights the potential of museums to act as bridges across cultural, social, and geopolitical divides, fostering dialogue, understanding, and peace within and between communities worldwide.”

📚Museums and cultural institutions help ensure that a wide range of stories are seen and heard. They expand access to knowledge, foster representation, and create opportunities for individuals of all backgrounds to engage with ideas that shape our collective experience. Beyond this, the arts contribute meaningfully to our well-being. Recent data from trusted sources such as the World Health Organization underscores this impact, 🫶showing measurable connections between arts engagement and improved mental health, social connection, and overall quality of life.

HUMA’s efforts to unite can be seen in our current exhibition, 🇺🇸“Our Unfinished Revolution(s)” commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Hofstra University Museum of Art will offer visitors an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s history and consider its future by engaging with art that poses questions about the founding document’s historical legacy.

This time of year is filled with memorable moments!

Last week, museum staff had the pleasure of attending HU student Ashley Jayne's senior dance practicum. Ashley has worked at the Hofstra University Museum of Art as an intern and curatorial undergraduate assistant for the past two years. For her project, Ashley combined her academic and professional experiences to choreograph a dance around Briseis, a sculpture by Paul Manship in the museum's outdoor sculpture collection. The result was a wonderful reflection on the mythology of the character Breseis, as well as a fitting culmination of Ashley's time at Hofstra.

We laughed, we sang, we created and shared a mindful moment with friends from the Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia Center (LIAD) yesterday.

Mindful Moment Mondays is a time for people living with dementia and their care partners to connect and enjoy art and community. Our group played paper violins inspired by the artwork of William Sidney Mount and made colorful fans inspired by Miriam Shapiro.

Join us at 4:30pm on Wednesday, April 15 for a special dance reception at the Hofstra University Museum of Art! Here’s a sneak peek of tomorrow’s performance.

The Hofstra University Museum of Art is happy to host “Dancing in Revolutionary America: Lecture and Demonstration”, featuring Caroline Copeland, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Dance at Hofstra University. This reception will be complete with Revolutionary-era dances, including one optional interactive dance for the audience! This reception will follow the lecture, “(Untold) Stories of Revolution in the Atlantic World: Haiti and Latin America” in the Guthart Theater.

The Hofstra University Museum of Art is requesting applications for community curators with representation from faculty, students, employees, and local school districts for its spring 2027 exhibition! The exhibition will showcase the projects and relationships between mentors and mentees, the nature of their relationships, and how knowledge is transferred. Community curator applicants will explore these themes by selecting artwork in the Museum’s permanent collection that relates to their areas of research.

Online applications are due by 11:59PM on Friday, May 1st.
