The artificial bubble and the griftWATA (founded ~2018) and auction houses like Heritage didn’t discover some organic collector market—they helped manufacture one. A sealed Super Mario 64 graded 9.8 A++ hit $1.56 million in 2021. Similar copies later sold for fractions of that ($240k, then lower). Super Mario Bros. copies jumped from tens of thousands to $2 million under the same system. YouTuber Karl Jobst and others documented the revolving door of advisors, buyers with ties to the graders, lack of population reports early on, and incentives where graders take a cut of higher valuations. Class-action lawsuits followed accusing market manipulation. Prices crashed. The “investment” thesis evaporated for most titles.
