It's such an honor to have been awarded 1st and 2nd place honors in the Signs of the Times annual portfolio contest (non-internally illuminated catagory). With nearly 190 entries from 66 individual sign companies, the selection pool covered multiple states and regions of the US, Canada and Europe. This is especially meaningful to be coinciding with this year's milestone of 35 years in this creative venture. A huge thanks goes out to my former company House of Signs for collaborating on the Thrashin' Axes project and team Gibbs Graphics in Washington for their fine contribution on the Osake project. And, none of this would be possible without my clients putting their full trust in my expertise by allowing me full creative freedom in design proccess, which is the critical backbone to each successful project, and extremely overlooked in our industry.

Celebrating 35 Creative Years!
Back in 1989 around mid-August, I decided to go out on my own and start my first custom sign company, “Signs by Roger”. The building I was so excited to operate out of was an unheated barn and $75/month rent, with the only heat source being a pot-belly wood stove and no insulation in the walls. Located at 9,200’ in elevation, this meant over 8 months of winter weather to navigate. During those colder months, I would line up my collection of oil paint cans in front of the wood stove to “thaw” them. I would usually use this time designing my next project sitting 2’ from the stove in an old leather couch. Little did I know of the unknown journey this decision would lead me, and the amazing community of sign artists and crafts people I would encounter and network with along the way. Not to mention the countless clients and employees I would get to meet, collaborate with and work alongside, many of whom I now consider friends. My passion for the craft and all the blood, sweat and tears I endured over the years has been humbling and gratifying. As I grew the business, later changing the name to House of Signs and then opening a sister company SignTech, I was able to graduate from the unheated barn to state-of-the-art facilities. My vision to create highly distinctive 3-dimensional sign-art projects to businesses and residences worldwide also garnered an internationally recognized reputation and over the years have been blessed to be awarded with over 50 industry awards. With a new venture in the works after having sold the Colorado enterprise in 2018, I am forever grateful at the decision I made 35 years ago this month. I’m looking forward to experiencing more milestones, perhaps less blood, sweat and tears, and lasting memories as Vim Creative – currently building-out an inspiring custom sign studio in Montana – continues to push the creative envelope with unique handcrafted creative signage.

I've been playing with some CAD drawings on how to update this old masonry building in a somewhat vintage-modern appeal. Corrugated & smooth metal in silver, copper and charcoal with dark bronze windows/doors. Looking for feedback on the aesthetic. The inside will be very bright with the skylights, etc. and white drywall with natural wood beams throughout.

Phase 2 complete! Passionate about creating distinctive restaurant signage and branding, this Key West, Florida project was no exception. Superb owners who allow me complete creative freedom to tell their story in a visual sense - meticulously designed and fabricated. The positive reception from the Key West community has been tremendous. Great collaborative effort with the Gibb's team.

More renovation progress on Vim Creative Studio - The skies are opening up in this once dark and partitioned building. The beautiful tall ceilings and open floorplan are starting to unfold after the demo-work of the masonry walls.

Thanks everyone for sending birthday cheer! It was a busy working day, but very gratifying to be making progress on the demo phase of an old Animal Hospital and converting to the new Vim Creative headquarters.

Quite the adventure traveling 5,384 miles (one-way) to get the first of 4 signs installed for new Bangkok Happy Bowl Asian Bistro in Key West, Florida. I'm so grateful to have such wonderful clients to work with that put all their trust in me to create yet another distinctive restaurant branding project within their multiple restaurant locations throughout the world. Designing within the Key West Historical Preservation District was a fun and challenging assignment. Another successful collaboration on the fabrication with Rusty and Amanda Gibb's team in Washington. Phase 2 signage to be completed in April.

Always grateful to be represented in one of the sign industries most respected trade publications. I still remember flipping through back issues of SignCraft in art school in the late 80's and being so inspired at the incredible signwork being displayed. I hope my work inspires other artists and designers as much as other artisans did for me over the years. Click link to read the article.
