KYPROS - ‘Copper’
Cypriot Alabaster
19 inches / 47 cm Tall
Cyprus got its name from copper deposits on the island. They have been mining copper there since 4000 BC., and the Roman’s copper supply came primarily from Cyprus. As I began to carve this Cypriot Alabaster, I could see the copper-colored striations in the stone. I decided to accent those copper areas by carving around them. The shape that emerged from the stone is reminiscent of the sails on boats I saw in the Mediterranean. Can you imagine those Sirocco winds blowing through my work?

Happy Birthday Mr. Javachev.
It was an incredible experience working with you in September 1976. I’m in a hard hat looking down at the bottom of the front ladder. We were so young that five days of climbing up and down 18 foot tall ladders was easy. Tom Holland and I drove out from Denison in Ohio to help install the Fence. We couldn’t stay to help take it down. We had to go back to school.
