Raven Performing Arts Theater

Raven Performing Arts Theater Welcome to The Raven, The Healdsburg Performing Arts Center! We are a group of individuals just lik The “R” was later added to the front of the name.

History of The Raven Performing Arts Theater

FROM "MOVE-OVER" TO COMMUNITY CENTER
The Raven Theater was built in Healdsburg in 1949 as a “move-over” motion picture theater. It was named the “Aven,” which was the owner’s wife’s name spelled backwards. In the 1990s the theater was remodeled by a new ownership group and became a community center offering movies, concerts, and a venue for local perfo

rmance groups. LOCAL INDIVIDUALS SAVE THEATER AS PERFORMING ARTS VENUE
In 2000 falling attendance and increased competition forced the owners to put the Raven Theater building up for sale. A small group of local individuals worked to save the theater as a performance venue and in 2001 incorporated as Healdsburg Performing Arts Theater (H-PAT). H-PAT entered into a lease/purchase agreement with the theater’s owners, exercised their option in 2005 and purchased the Raven for approximately $850,000. The theater is continually undergoing upgrades to its performance space, making the facility more versatile and audience- and performer-friendly. THE RAVEN PERFORMING ARTS THEATER
Healdsburg Performing Arts Theater now operates under the name Raven Performing Arts Theater. Since the purchase of the Healdsburg building, this organization has grown to include more than one hundred volunteers and performers. More than 130 performances are presented annually. The Raven is now the performance home of the Raven Players, H-Town Youth Theater, and Healdsburg Jazz Festival, as well as annual school performances by Healdsburg Elementary School, Westside School, and St. John’s School. In 2014, the Raven launched a second smaller black-box venue in Windsor. At 2015’s year end, the Windsor venue closed to focus on the original Healdsburg location. WHERE WOULD WE BE WITHOUT THE PERFORMING ARTS? Performing arts are more than a momentary distraction; they reflect our dreams, expand our world, offer respite from our troubles, fill us with wonder and joy, and make us laugh out loud. The value we place on performing arts reflects the value we place on the quality of our lives.

“Do you ever think the ‘professional world’ is like that because we let people like Arik and Christopher tell us it has to be?”

Meet Sierra Reid, playing Hailey in macbitches! ✄

When we asked Sierra what they love most about the show, their answer touched on something we don’t always talk about when it comes to the college experience the friendships we find along the way:

“My favorite thing about the show is how it explores the different types of platonic love one can find in college. Sometimes you find the perfect fit, sometimes you don't, and sometimes you don't find out until it's too late.”

Friendship, ambition, loyalty, competition, and figuring out who’s really in your corner. macbitches takes a darkly funny look at what can happen when all of those things collide.

Come see Sierra bring Hailey to life when macbitches takes the Raven stage September 4–20.

“They should have just stuck him with the musical!” 🎭

Meet Rebekah Sharp, playing Rachel in macbitches! ✄

When we asked Rebekah what she loves about the show, she pretty much summed up the wonderfully stressful world of theatre school:

“It perfectly captures the anxiety, camaraderie, and passionate, sometimes brutal desire to be the lead that lives in every BFA program.”

Ambition, friendship, competition, and a group of young actors who really, really want the part. 👀 What could possibly go wrong?

Come meet Rachel and the rest of the cast when macbitches hits the Raven stage September 4–20.

“Did you guys see they added Uncrustables to the vending machines?” — Piper, macbitches 😂

Meet Shanay Howell, playing Piper Bell in macbitches! ✄

When we asked Shanay to tell us a little about Piper, we loved her take on the character:

“No matter the hand she's been dealt, she can always find the bright spot. She steps out on faith (literally and figuratively) and uses the lessons to learn and grow.”

And what excites her most about macbitches? The way it captures a very particular kind of theatrical agony that anyone who’s ever auditioned for a show knows all too well:

“It's rare to see a work that captures the process before, during, and after audition callbacks. The excitement and the agony of waiting for the cast list. The jubilation of being cast or the disappointment from rejection. Everyone in the audience will either know this experience firsthand, or know someone who's been through this process.

Having this show centered around the iconic ‘Scottish Play’ by Shakespeare is not a coincidence, and the genius of the playwright is demonstrated throughout the arc of each character. The stakes are high, creating an environment where friendships and the boundaries of trust are tested.

What happens next? You will have to see for yourself.”

We couldn’t have said it better. 👀

We can’t wait to see Shanay bring Piper to life on the Raven stage. Get your tickets and come see what happens when ambition, friendship, Shakespeare, and a very high-stakes cast list collide.

“I’m not fu #*ed up enough for this. Anyone down for a drinking game?”- Alexis, macbitches

Meet Clarice Perez, Alexis in "macbitches" 🩸 We asked Clarice what drew her to this show and character and she said, "I love how complex and multifaceted the show is. I think from a surface level perspective this group of girls can just be seen as shallow villainous divas who have it out for the new girl. Which definitely they can be at times, but I think McIntosh did a phenomenal job at creating these moments of humanization for each character that make the audience realize they’re all just girls dealing with a lot of hurt."

Don't miss "macbitches", written by Sophie McIntosh and directed by Jeanette Seisdedos, playing September 4th-20th at the Raven. Get your tickets here- https://ravenperformingartstheater.thundertix.com/events/263391

macbitches takes a darkly funny look at the toxic, high-stakes world of university theater, centering on a freshman who unexpectedly lands the role of Lady Macbeth. The play centers on freshman acting major Hailey, who unexpectedly scores the coveted role of Lady Macbeth. Her upperclassmen rivals immediately invite her over to “celebrate.” As the Fireball and Svedka flow, the young women interrogate their own ambitions as well as the power structures that have shaped their education—and when the night spirals into violent and shocking acts of betrayal, they come to learn that what’s done cannot be undone.

“macbitches takes Shakespearean themes and grounds them in a recognizable, modern reality — a smarter, theater-centered Mean Girls, if you will. It's funny, sharp, and unafraid to let women be complicated.”- Jeanette Seisdedos, Director

TONIGHT AND TOMORROW NIGHT! Are you ready for RAVEN 24/7?! One of our favorite events of the year is HERE!!!!

What is Raven 24/7 you ask? It's theatre without a safety net!

The details: Seven writers, seven directors, and seven groups of actors gather together Friday, August 21st, at the Raven and, with the help of the audience, select a theme that will inspire the writers to each write a ten-minute play. The audience also votes on one line of dialogue that must be in each play. The writers then have until 8 am Saturday to write their plays; the directors and actors rehearse from 10 am to 4 pm, returning to the Raven at 4:30 to do a quick tech run in preparation for performing all seven plays at 7:30 pm to an eager and enthusiastic audience.

Join us for theatre like you've never experienced before, your ticket is good for both nights!
