National Katyń Memoriał Park in Baltimore

Today my husband and I visited the National Katyń Memorial in Baltimore. 🇵🇱

I knew the story of Katyń, but standing in front of this monument was something completely different. There is a sadness that is hard to put into words when you stand before a memorial built to remember thousands of lives brutally taken from their families and their country.

In 1940, more than 20,000 Polish officers, intellectuals, and other prisoners were murdered by the Soviet NKVD. For decades, their families were left without the truth.

Looking at the monument today, I couldn’t help but think about the mothers, wives, children, and families who waited… never knowing the full truth of what had happened to the people they loved.

Some stories are painful to remember.
But forgetting them would be even more painful.

Today we remembered. We stood quietly. We felt the sadness. And we paid our respects.

The beautiful and powerful bronze monument, created by Polish-American sculptor Andrzej Pityński, was dedicated in Baltimore on November 19, 2000. It stands as a reminder of those who were lost—and of the importance of remembering..

This morning, we went to Baltimore to stand in front of one of Ezra Berger’s murals…

"Highlandtown Shakedown" - painted by Ezra Berger in June 2014.
📍3201 Eastern Avenue, at Eastern Avenue & East Avenue, Highlandtown, Baltimore

Ezra was commissioned to create this mural as part of a community effort to bring new life and character to this neighborhood. Local residents and business owners came together to decide what they wanted for this space, and a new mural was one of the improvements they chose.
And that is what I love so much about
Ezra's work.He believed in using public art to change the feeling of a neighborhood.
To take an ordinary wall and turn it into something that makes people stop, look, smile and feel connected to the place they call home.
Standing there today, looking at something Ezra created 12 years ago, was incredibly emotional.
Because now I can see that this was more than a mural. It was part of the beginning of something Ezra carried with him throughout his life — the belief that art can transform a place and bring people together.
And somehow, standing there today, I felt like I was standing with a little piece of him.

Because now I understand even more clearly that what he was doing all those years ago was planting the seeds of what he would eventually create here in Havre de Grace.
He used art to change the feeling of a place.
And he left pieces of himself behind everywhere .
Today, just wanted to stand there and remember him.

Baltimore…. Standing here in front of Ezra’s mural… I just broke down.. realizing that these colors, these lines, this incredible piece of art came from him. From the person we laughed with, talked with, were sad with , and now miss more than words can ever explain.
I stood here for a while today. I didn’t want to rush away. I just wanted to feel it. To take in every color, every detail, and imagine Ezra standing here creating it.

Oh, Ezra… how incredibly you are missed. 💔 you weren’t just an artist. You poured yourself into your art. Your murals are bold, full of life, full of color, and impossible to ignore—just like the mark you left on the people who love you .
So many people are still standing in front of your work, smiling, remembering, talking about you, and feeling the love you left behind.

Today, I stood here and took it all in… and I felt so much love for my friend. ❤️
Your art is still speaking. Your colors are still shining. Thank you for leaving the world a little more colorful.

You left this world far too soon, but you left something behind that no one can take away. You left your art. Your imagination. Your wild, beautiful creativity. You left color where there could have been empty walls—and pieces of your heart for all of us to find.

Today, I found one of those pieces…

And for a little while, standing here beside your work, it felt like you were close.

Love you, my friend . And I will keep looking for you in the colors you left behind…

A little early, but I couldn’t wait!

National Hummingbird Day is coming up on September 5th, but that happens to be my son’s birthday AND a beautiful wedding I’ll be photographing—so I already know I won’t have much time to post !
So I’m celebrating a little early with some of my favorite tiny visitors.
Hummingbirds may be tiny, but they bring SO much magic with them. Their speed, grace, brilliant colors, and those little hovering moments that seem almost impossible… they’re nature’s tiny miracles.

Here’s to the hummingbirds—and to my birthday boy, and fingers crossed for beautiful weather for the wedding day !

🚨 HAVRE DE GRACE IS HEADING TO FLORIDA!

Today I dropped off a 24x36 canvas featuring one of my absolute favorite images I’ve ever captured—the Amtrak Susquehanna River Bridge during winter month

I photographed this years ago , you can enjoy the old deck which used to ran right along that part of the river , and if you look closely, you can even see old bridge pieces nearby..
But here’s the best part… this beauty is moving to a new home in TAMPA, FLORIDA!
Its new owner grew up right here in Havre de Grace and now lives in Tampa. She’s coming home to spend a month with her best friend, and I’m SO excited that she’ll be taking a big piece of her hometown back to Florida with her!

I dropped it off today—and now the hardest part is waiting to hear what she thinks when she sees it!

We stopped by Danny’s Deli today to grab sandwiches for the boat—because nothing beats the convenience of picking up an AMAZING meal in town and heading straight to the water!

And if you haven’t been yet, you’re missing out! They’ve got BIG, delicious signature subs, hot roast beef, specialty made egg salad , toasted BLTs, homemade shrimp salad and so much more!

But what makes Danny’s Deli extra special? The two amazing people behind it. ❤️ Keith Lay and Daniel DalMolin Lay . They have the biggest hearts and are ALWAYS willing to volunteer, help out, and show up for our community.

Amazing food + amazing people + right here in our town = GO SUPPORT THEM!

Thank you for the most delicious lunch !! Now let’s eat !!

The historic building at 234 N. Washington St. is being renovated by Newberry Cafe & Bakery out of Bel Air, bringing fresh-made baked goods back to the former Goll's space .
