The rooftop unit was the reason for the call. The better story was downstairs.

In Part 2 of this Old Iron Files job, I head down into the mechanical room of a 1933 East Baltimore church — a building that started life as a 1910s movie theater — and find half of a system hiding in the basement that the rooftop unit had nothing to do with.

What's down there: a 180,000 BTU York air handler still running on R-22. Then the hunt for where it rejects its heat — out the back, through the vines and the chain-link, a caged-and-fenced York condenser nobody would've found without looking.

This is what real commercial service work looks like: reading a building, following the refrigerant, and not guessing when the nameplate's gone.
