As America celebrates 250 years of independence, we often reflect on the people, events, and ideals that shaped our nation. But throughout that history, dogs have been there too.
For the 2nd installment of History & Paws, we’re sharing the story of Seaman, the loyal Newfoundland dog who accompanied the legendary Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Purchased by Meriwether Lewis in 1803, Seaman traveled more than 8,000 miles alongside the Corps of Discovery as they explored the newly acquired Louisiana Territory and journeyed to the Pacific Ocean.
Along the way, Seaman helped guard camp, alerted the expedition to wildlife and intruders, hunted small game, and became a trusted companion during one of America’s most important explorations.
The expedition faced harsh weather, dangerous terrain, unfamiliar wildlife, and countless challenges. Through it all, Seaman remained by their side.
Seaman’s story reminds us that some of America’s greatest adventures were shared with a loyal dog.
250 Years. Countless Paws.
