A new episode of my podcast Improv In Real Life featuring the fantastic Kirsten Henning, who trains leaders and teams in a range of settings all over the world using improv. She’s brilliant and we had a great conversation about what generates the strengths of a good leader, how improv cultivate them and we play some fun games.

These creatives made for a great night of storytelling at Open Space Gallery in Brooklyn. The theme was “Cooling Off” and I told a story about an out of control sandwich. And my insecurity about making a good impression.

Getting into flow is associated with a number of mental health benefits, which we will discuss in this workshop. To free our creative mind, we have to be in a receptive, expansive mindset. Improv exercises help us shift out of the self-protective defenses that can automatically arise when we are faced with the unfamiliar or great uncertainty, and translate into real-life embrace of the possible.

This workshop will focus on exercises and games that are ridiculous enough to take us out of the conventions and concerns of regular life, fun enough to overcome the inner judge always ready to monitor us for mistakes or shoot down our most interesting ideas, and structured enough for us to take risks. This combination generates creative flow, with the added bonus of comedy, surprise, and discovery. The link to register is in bio

Uncertainty is a necessary dimension of change. Whether we want to take up a healthy habit, get out of a negative life pattern, deal with unexpected grief, level up at work or any other life situation that requires moving forward through the unknown, there is a “messy middle” when the old ways are not longer available but the new is not yet established. This uncertainty can be deeply uncomfortable and stress-inducing. But research into the science of resilience shows that improvisation training cultivates skills that expand the capacity to tolerate uncertainty.
In the article “Yes, Listening To Music Is Therapy” neuroscientist, writer and author Daniel Levitin writes that, even with all the emphasis on skill, precision and knowledge, “art, science, and medicine trade in doubt—and in its remedy, improvisation.” The full article us on my Substack. I’m offering this online applied improv workshop on Monday July 20, 6:30-8:30 pm EDT: OUT OF CHARACTER: How Improv Skills Help Navigate The Dynamics Of Change.
This workshop will use fun, engaging improv games and exercises to generate a supportive psychological space, and tap the spontaneity we need to make up characters-imaginary people with identifiable traits, habits of mind, wants, dreams, and struggles. Playing with these characters give us creative distance from reality while exploring the dynamics of change that we face in real life. The improv exercises are structured enough to have guidelines about how to engage, and free enough to experiment with new ways to express emotions, wants and ideas. Through this kind of direct experience with the collaborative spirit that improv encourages we can expand our strengths and discover hidden gifts that prepare us for the future that comes at us faster than ever. Reach out to me with any questions. Link to register is in bio
