USM Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (4/4):
Phil Proctor's piece Close Encounter
📍Location: 3D Arts Building on West 4th St.

Artist Statement: “As a sculptor artist, I strive to design and execute artworks that intrigue and inspire a view about their place in an environment or space. My work exhibits a relationship between our existence as human species and the universe in which we exist,” said Proctor.

USM Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (1/4):
Chris Wubenna's piece Victoria
📍Location: In front of the Liberal Arts Building

Artist Statement: Victoria, Latin for “victory” is inspired by The Nike of Samothrace, an 1,800-year-old marble sculpture displayed at the Louvre in Paris. “I felt it was the perfect opportunity to make my own homage to The Winged Victory,” said Wubbena. “The sense of victory represented in my sculpture is not forever, but fleeting and eroding.”

USM Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (2/4):
Kristen Tordella-Williams's piece Eudora Welty Wreath
📍Location: Left side of the International Center

Artist Statement: Tordella-Williams’ interests lie in the layers of the impressions left by our bodies on the environment around us and the reciprocal impressions our bodies hold from the wear and tear of living. She gathers and re-interprets the remnants of labor, identity, gender, and memory, discovered or made.

The Eudora Welty Wreath sculpture features castings of handprints from patrons of the Eudora Welty Library in Jackson, as well as cast-off books from a book sale at the library.

USM Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (3/4):
Noah Kirby's piece Killbox-Force of Action of Force
📍Location: Behind of the Liberal Arts Building

Artist Statement: Iron-pouring events have a long tradition in the metal-sculpture world, and Kirby expands on that by hosting his own events since 2010. His goal is to support young artists through his studio by sharing expertise, building frames, and pouring iron. “I’m doing something that’s been done for thousands of years,” Kirby said. “I’m part of a creative legacy and that creativity had a direct link to our industrial processes.”

Installations are complete! The weather was brutally hot over the two days, but we got it done and everything went super smooth. Thanks to Jen Torres the director of the show, Kevin Vanek the installation guru, and the selection committee- Luis Iglesias, Stacy Reischman Fletcher, Kevin Vanek, Logan Smith, and Jen Torres. And of course to all the students who were so instrumental in the installations- Maddie, Alex, Madie, Danielle, Austin, Jessica, and all the others who I am sure I left off. Also, thank you to Partners For The Arts for funding the lectures and to the USM College of Arts and Sciences for funding the exhibition and administrative support. And Finally to our dear artists, Noah Kirby, Chris Wubbena, Kristen Tordella-Williams and Phil Proctor, THANK YOU! Without your work, there would be no show!
