Do you see where the title comes from? My homage to Vermeer continues, this time on the mounted raw linen covered panels I’ve been making. A few details wait for me when I get back to Vermont: holes in the colander, final touches on the grapes. Kathy and I are up in Maine, soaking up some sea air and scouting for painting ideas for the upcoming winter months.

Isn’t it ironic that linseed oil in my paint and flax fiber in linen canvas come from the same plant?

As an experiment, I decided to paint on mounted linen without primer. I protected the linen fibers with a coat of Golden matte medium to make them less absorbent to the oils in the paint. I found that by leaving the linen “raw” the matrix of fibers clings to the paint in a helpful way, pulling the pigment off the brush and depositing it into the nest of fibers instead of smearing it onto the shield of gesso.

Drawing on it is a bit more difficult and I found wolffs carbon pencils 4B leave a decent mark, and General Pencil Charcoal White (is that an oxymoron?) show highlights. Here are the early results of this experiment: a 20x20 work in progress painting of Gooch’s Beach in Kennebunkport, Maine.

It’s a long way out on the ferry to Monhegan Island from Port Clyde, Maine. So a Pepsi and an ice cream cone can help pass a little of the time before you leave the calm waters and the islands and get on the open ocean. Too bad the store is closed—a hazard when you take the early boat.

Oh, those Kodachrome mornings in Maine! I found a trove of 35 mm slides I took in 1993 and this is the third painting inspired by that iconic red boat casting reflections and cutting an artful swath in its path.

The first painting featured a small boat leaving a blue line in the dark reflections. But I couldn’t resist an expanded view with the red lobster boat doing the same thing in the second painting. Here, in no. 3, I zoomed in and indulging myself with closer attention to the elements on display in the early morning light.
