The Mari Lwyd
Inspiration came from once I first heard of the Mari Lwyd on a winter’s night, when the wind whispered through the hills and the stars hung low over Wales. It arrives like something out of a dream, or perhaps a spell of a pale horse’s skull crowned with ribbons and carried gently through the dark from door to door.
Mari Lwyd (meaning “Grey Mare” or possibly “Grey Mary” in Welsh) comes alive through a ritualistic exchange of songs and rhymes known as pwnco. This “battle of wits” is a key part of the wassailing tradition, performed around Yule - Christmas and New Year’s, and is believed to bring good luck and fortune to the household for the coming year.
When the singing begins, it feels as though the veil between worlds thins, and laughter, magic, and mystery slip inside with the cold night air. And when the door finally opens, I swear the house glows warmer than before as if the Mari Lwyd has left behind something unseen but wonderful.
The eerie yet playful character of the Mari Lwyd makes it one of Wales’s most unique and unforgettable traditions.
