Join us at The Arts at 131 W. Grace St. on September 1 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. for a casual Art & Health Gathering with guest speaker Pato Hebert, NYU Professor of Art & Public Policy, who will briefly introduce his work on long-haul COVID, AIDS prevention, and other health-related issues through art. The program includes additional brief lightning talks, refreshments, and opportunities for networking. RSVP required (see bio for link); space is limited to 50 guests.

As part of his campus residency, artist and educator Pato Hebert will present a series of public events exploring the intersections of art, health, and collective care. His exhibition, Sick Days, opens in the Duke Hall Gallery of Fine Art on September 8 from 5:00-7:00 p.m., with a bring-your-own-white-T-shirt printing at 5:00 p.m. and an artist talk at 6:00 p.m. Hebert will also deliver the Dorothy Liskey Wampler Distinguished Professor of Art Lecture, Collective Wellness, on September 10 at 6:00 p.m. in the Duke Hall Gallery Court. These events are supported by a JMU College of Visual and Performing Arts Inclusive Excellence Cultural Connections Project Award and the Dorothy Liskey Wampler Distinguished Professorship of Art Award. Join OCP for First Fridays of the Valley on August 7 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., at The Arts at 131 W. Grace St. This month: photographic and 3D works by John Burgess, who recently retired from an 18-year career as an educator and administrator at James Madison University.

“Foundations: A Retrospective from the Golden Age of Roller Coasters” presents a study of the art of roller coaster design as seen at the tail-end of the Golden Age of Roller Coasters. From the late 1920s to the early 1980s, roller coasters flourished through the amusement park system. Foundations seeks to capture the life cycle of roller coasters through four photographic themes: Vistas, People, Structure, and Decay. Through these themes we reflect on roller coasters as sculptural objects, focusing on the inherent aesthetic beauty created by the artisans who created them. Central to this reflection is a replica of the Ocean View Skyrocket, a classic boardwalk style coaster which thrilled patrons in Ocean View Virginia until 1979. Burgess will be on hand during the First Friday event to share stories about capturing these thrilling images.
