We wish to express our condolences for a loss suffered by our Lyric Theater–Ozark Arts Council family—Gray Squires. Gray was involved in so many plays at the Lyric, playing every sort of music a play might have in it, that we doubt anyone could give an accurate count of just how many he was involved with, unless a lot of combing through old articles and Playbills were to be done.

The comment by a gifted and well-practiced musician like Paul Vinton McBride that Gray Squires had taught him a lot made us feel even more privileged not only to know Gray, but to have been taught some things by him as well. So patient, so kind, and someone who lifted our orchestra members far above their capabilities, and that’s what great artists—and great people—do.

We’ve lost way too many great people at the Lyric in the past year or so. We hope this opportunity to think about Gray will help us to remember what a treasure we have been given in each other, so that we take the time to express that to one another while we can and to encourage one another to follow that example of unselfishly making one another better, whether in playing and singing music, acting, dancing, design, the visual arts, literature, or whatever else might be named. That’s what we remember Gray doing for us, along with the others who have recently passed—Dicksie Milburn, Jerome Tauer, Tom Fitton, Mary Alice Bishop—that gave so much to make the Lyric and OAC what it is today.

And finally, in our Meet the Cast series for THE SILVER WHISTLE!
Presenting longtime Lyric star, Daniel Seay as the Policeman. Daniel is finally back after a brief hiatus from acting to return to his old character of the Policeman, which he played in an earlier version of The Silver Whistle. Don’t let his charming demeanor fool you, though. He’ll send the whole lot of you to prison!
Next! He’s mysterious, mystifying, marvelous, and a little bit magical…. He’s Matt Hamblin! Matt is playing the role of Danino the Conjuror. He has also played this character before, but still somehow manages to bring something new and weird to the role every day. All jokes aside, Matt has been involved at the Lyric for well over a decade, and through his support and ability to make everyone in the room smile, he has been nothing but a valued asset to the team. He is also incredibly good-looking, totally hilarious, and has an adorable face and a cute butt.
Finally, we have the handsome and dazzling Andrew Coble as the Soldier. Andrew has been acting at the Lyric for the better part of a decade, and audiences will tell you, “wow, that guy sure is handsome and dazzling,” probably. He is best known for his handsome face and dazzling face as well as his fantastic acting chops.
Come see these three fine gentlemen perform at the Lyric Theater, Wednesday November 29th and Thursday November 30th at 9 am and 11 am, Friday December 1st and Saturday December 2nd at 7 pm, and Sunday December 3rd at 2 pm. Tickets available at TheLyric.org!

(Please note: while we don’t disagree with the relative handsomeness of Matt and Andrew, we think it only fair to let you know that their wives wrote this post.)

Next up in our Meet the Cast series for THE SILVER WHISTLE!
Meet our ragamuffins, Bago and Rago, played by Ann Lemley and Brinkley Brewer. Ann and Brinkley play the outrageous criminals who’s nefarious actions drive the plot. Both women are seasoned criminals, er, veterans, of the Lyric Theater, and have been in multiple productions over the last several years. This is their first time acting so closely together, and they are absolutely killing it. Hats off, and wallets safely hidden, to our favorite dynamic duo! Come see them perform at the Lyric Theater, Wednesday November 29th and Thursday November 30th at 9 am and 11 am, Friday December 1st and Saturday December 2nd at 7 pm, and Sunday December 3rd at 2 pm. Tickets available at TheLyric.org!

As always, we have to take a brief moment to thank the people who work so hard behind the scenes on our productions here at the Lyric Theater. Presenting, the crew of THE SILVER WHISTLE!
On lights, we have our ever faithful and brilliant Tony Grimes. You may not see him up in the lightbooth in almost every one of our productions, but you can see everyone else - and that is because of Tony!
On costumes, we have Becky Poor and Elizabeth Coble. These two creative ladies are the best, what more needs to be said?
On set design and construction, we have the irreplaceable Rick Poor. Rick is also the best, we truly don’t know what we would do without him and his amazing wife Becky.
Presenting our stage manager and assistant director, Kylan Mayes. Kylan has worn many hats in this production, as she has not only been directing, but she is in the play, and has had to fill in for any cast member who could not attend rehearsal. Kylan is truly the best.
And finally, our hero, our leader, our favorite, and, of course, THE BEST, Michael Mahoney, our fearless director. The man who makes it all come to life, who spends hundreds of hours at the theater for every production, who gives his time and love and his all to each and every show he does, we sincerely love Michael. Thank you for all you do.
Come see the work that our phenomenal crew has done at the Lyric Theater, Wednesday November 29th and Thursday November 30th at 9 am and 11 am, Friday December 1st and Saturday December 2nd at 7 pm, and Sunday December 3rd at 2 pm. Tickets available at TheLyric.org!

Our Story

Built in 1929 as the area’s first movie theater for ‘talkies’, the Lyric Theater is a unique venue for plays and concerts and is owned by the Ozark Arts Council.

The Ozark Arts Council is a cultural treasure created with and sustained by money, labor, materials, and support from the entire community in pursuing its Mission:

The primary means for fulfilling this mission is through the OAC’s ownership and operation of the historic Lyric Theater and fostering a supportive and well-funded environment for all the Arts. We are driven in our endeavors by a commitment to our Vision:

Read the history of the Lyric and enjoy this delightful article by Adria Englishof First Security Bank’s “Only in Arkansas” magazine, check our website, for location and directions, and for rental information and specifications important to performers, directors, sound engineers, etc.
