Wulfkind Creator’s Journal | Entry 003

The idea for Madison Dusk came in 2017. I knew she had very pale skin and was half-vampire, but she was a phantom in my imagination. This mysterious vampire haunted my thoughts until I was compelled to find out more about her.

My early detective work to understand her was way off. At first, I thought she had brown hair and a lot of tattoos. I was mistaken about her hobbies. I was confused about her purpose and motivations in life. But the more I looked, the more I recognized the truth about Mads.

I learned that she would become a hero. I learned that she was living as a recluse and her brother had been kidnapped fourteen years ago. I also realized that my notion about her brown hair had been wrong—she let me know she was blonde. And the tattoos faded away.

After all of those details were locked into place, I pondered her weapons. I imagined these huge hooks in her hands. Meat hooks. They reminded me of a bigger set of iron fangs, and it all seemed to go with her vampire nature.

When we first meet Mads in “Crow City,” the Mad Dusk Series - Book 1, she is at the beginning of her arc, not yet a hero. The vampire gene inside her hasn’t been awakened and the hooks are lying dormant in her apartment, just like she is. But in Crow City, fate has a funny way of crossing people's paths.

Mads has one thing that she wants—needs—more than anything else in life. She needs to find her brother, Howie. And from that love, the rest of her story was born, as well as the backbone for the Mad Dusk series.

Until next time,

Sam

Wulfkind Creator’s Journal | Entry 006

Omyn, whose full name is Silas Omyn, is one of my favorite characters from our Storyworld. As you know, omens can often be bad—and this vicious vampire is as bad as they come.

Omyn has taken a winding path to creation, more so than almost any other character in the Wulfiverse.

He didn’t even start out as a vampire. Although he was always Mackenzie Dean’s top enforcer, he morphed through various versions before finally becoming the toothy tyrant you now see.

At first, he was only a man—not supernatural in any way—just an extremely ill-tempered, bald bastard whose favorite pain-inflicting instrument was a simple bicycle chain lock, which he either swung or wrapped around his fist. His name at that time was Eugene Love. Yep . . . that was his name.

Then later, I imagined him as having certain traits of a wolf. Not a full werewolf. He was more of a half-werewolf. That version of him was named Wulfkind.

As the Storyworld evolved, characters were reshaped, and it was during that process that he became a daywalking vampire. The rest of the puzzle pieces fell into place and finally, it all clicked.

Our studio name became Wulfkind and my 6’5 punisher became Omyn, the bloodsucking second in command within the Order of the Veil and right-hand man to the Dark Mistress, Mackenzie Dean.

Until next time,

Sam

Wulfkind Creator’s Journal | Entry 005

Morlynd, whose full name is Morlynd Arachne, is one of those anomalous characters who showed up almost fully intact and didn’t need any alterations over time. I don’t think I’ve changed a single thing about him since his inception. The only change somewhat related to him really has to do with Clara Xandra, known as Porcelain X. She was originally going to be the musician in the Storyworld, but as I got to know her, I realized it didn’t work with her arc, and that’s when Morlynd was born.

The inspiration for him came from David Bowie. The Starman. Ziggy Stardust. I imagined an extraterrestrial who ends up on Earth and loves making music. Our Storyworld already had a species of aliens called the Hruza who are shapeshifting energy vampires from space, so that aspect of his life fell right into place. I pictured Morlynd with hair that is half white, and half black—probably because David Bowie had two different colored eyes—and it just made sense to me.

From the beginning, his role as a secret investigator and archivist of phenomena, events, locations, and creatures across the Eight Edges of Space was an important part of his story. Morlynd makes his first appearance in The Dead Will Dream series after Claire is attacked by Veil agents, and the knowledge he has uncovered is crucial to saving her kidnapped brother. He also features prominently in the Crow City Podcast as Brooks Harlow’s partner in paranormal investigations.

The music on Morlynd’s latest EP called Stars Are Right and his collection of poems called Myths & Magic offer insights into the mysteries of the Storyworld and are reflections of his life and work.

Until next time,

Sam

Wulfkind Creator’s Journal | Entry 004

The Wulfkind logo has had a journey of its own. The version we’ve been using up until now was purposely created as a placeholder while we dialed in the direction of the studio.

A few months ago, we hired a different designer to create a new logo, but it didn’t turn out well. I don’t think I made the right decision on who was hired for it. I believe in taking responsibility for everything that goes wrong in our endeavors, so I’ll put the blame on me.

After that mistake, I decided to give the whole thing a bit of space and let the universe shed some light on the subject. Sure enough, after a few months, things clicked into place with a clear inspiration for the new logo, as well as the right designer to create it!

So, without further ado, meet the new logo of Wulfkind Studios!

Until next time,

Sam
