ucational programming, and of course, organizing the world’s largest free jazz festival over Labor Day weekend. With the support of corporate sponsors, philanthropic organizations, individual donors and volunteers, the Detroit Jazz Festival is free to music fans looking to revel in the artistry and improvisation of jazz legends, rising stars, legacy and homecoming artists. Each year’s lineup of more than 60 performances spanning multiple stages in Hart Plaza and Campus Martius, as well as spontaneous late-night jam sessions, offers something for everyone. Our year-round educational programming creates one-of-a-kind opportunities for regional students and aspiring musicians to help them achieve artistic excellence, while our concerts celebrate the works of students and mentors, in addition to local and national artists.

With a consolidated footprint in Hart Plaza with multiple stages to enjoy some of the world’s greatest jazz artists, the 2026 Detroit Jazz Festival is shaping up to be one of the best.

The full schedule of artists, stages and times is now set, with jazz greats and next-generation rising stars appearing on three Hart Plaza stages, with a fourth at the Detroit Jazz Hall located inside the Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center at Wayne State University, in Midtown Detroit.

Artist-in-Residence Joe Lovano will have three separate performances.

Festival favorites, including Dee Dee Bridgewater and Detroit native Ron Carter, are slated to perform. And next-generation players, like the J.C. Heard JazzWeek All Stars and the Tottori Young Lions Trio, from Japan, will offer audiences a look at how young people are interpreting this great American music.

The 2026 festival kicks on September 4 and runs through Labor Day weekend, ending on September 7.

One other notable change this year: Coolers will no longer be permitted in Hart Plaza, for safety and crowd-flow reasons. But admission will, as always, be free, and vendors will offer plenty to eat and drink throughout the day.

The Detroit jazz community suffered a loss this week with the death of trumpeter Rayse Biggs. Detroit Jazz Festival President Chris Collins remembers him well: “Rayse inspired generations of artists. He was the quintessential Detroit musician-equally at home in jazz, funk, pop and a myriad of other styles. Always creative. Always musical. And, always generous sharing his knowledge and time to support aspiring artists. His joy and love for this music was infectious and will continue to resonate and inspire!”
