William is about 2 1/2 here. We talk about him sometimes but William doesnā€™t remember him much. That hurts. I wish he, and all my boys, could have experienced what a wonderful, loving grandfather he was. I know I mention this a lot- but there is always a point where a portrait starts to feel like the soul of what youā€™re creating starts speaking to you. As though itā€™s reaching across some divide. I struggle, as most artists do, with the ā€œugly phaseā€ of a project. And many would say that this feeling is just the breakthrough past tjar momentā€¦ but I donā€™t believe that it is. Many of these are portraits of beloved family members who have passed on- and I know in my heart that they want to reach out to those for whom Iā€™m working to comfort them. To communicate that where they are is beautiful, and peaceful, and without pain. And that they wait there to greet those theyā€™ve left behind- and maybe their portrait can be a window to press a palm against until that time comes. In the end- it just makes me grateful to be the steward of that love letter from beyond.
