“Listen, for a long time I haven't liked who I was in the past. For a long time I have spoken in terms of how much more I am now than who I was. But lately Jesus has been coming around and thumping on my heart, asking me to look back and see a bit more what He sees.

What I hear often these days is harder than anything I have ever heard before: There was good here. There was meaning. There was faithfulness. Do you see as I see? Do you see the love for you I have that you say I have for everyone else? Why would I give it to everyone else and not to you too?

This, too, is about pride. This is about relinquishing my right to the circle of The Ones Who Know. This is about the redemptive love of Jesus that is so wild and so offensive that it includes even the parts of me that are riddled with embarrassment and foolishness. This means that I speak of my past as if Jesus loves it, too.

Listen: take a deep breath. Be kind to your past self. Pull a chair up to the table for it and put Jesus between you both. See what Jesus sees, see what Jesus saw in you then that delighted Him. Honestly, nothing scares me more. But I think the healing our Lord offers is as timeless as His love: it captures the whole of us, where we have been and where we are to go."

"Another problem with teaching that you should leave the past behind is its disregard for the broken-hearted. God gets plainly upset when his people do not help his hurting ones.

An individual may suffer pain now because of past wounds that have gone untouched by love. Such abandoned or otherwise hurt people carry broken, abused hearts. And however convincingly a teacher claims that such hurts simply vanish with time, they don't. They need to be touched.

What heals them is God's love through his people and his Spirit. When someone has a broken heart, they need the love of other believers.

Those who have been hurt by the family they grew up in need the love and care of their new family, the family of God (Luke 8:21), to heal their old wounds and give them the love they need."
