Today we feature the director of “The President & The Space Lady”.

Clark A. Cruikshank is grateful to revisit “The President & The Space Lady”, having been a collaborative participant in its inception way back in the George W II era. Clark, a native Illinoisian, enjoyed a busy acting career in Minnesota for over two decades, and served as Producing Director for the Jon Hassler Theater in Plainview from 2001 to 2007.

Clark currently resides with his wife, Maria, and their furry family in historic downtown Hannibal, MO—“America’s Hometown”, boyhood home of Sam Clemens (aka Mark Twain), and the inspiration for Twain’s “St. Petersburg”, the “white town drowsing” where the adventures of Tom and Huck played out.

Clark has collaborated with Bluff City Theater in Hannibal on productions of “The Last Five Years”, “Love Letters”, “Misery”, and “Kennedy: Bobby's Last Crusade” as director, “Insane Sisters” and “Unfinished: The Last Fireside Chat” as actor and playwright, and “The Maze Runner Live” as director and co-playwright.

Under the auspices of his own Hannibal-based brand, Studio 57 Productions, Clark has created radio play versions of “It’s a Wonderful Life”, “Miracle on 34th Street”, “Casablanca”, “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, and “Tom Sawyer Abroad”. With co-playwright Richard Garey (Mark Twain Himself), Clark wrote “On the Seventh Day: Charlie and Sam Ring In the New Year”, in which he performed as Charles Dickens alongside Garey as Sam Clemens.

Career highlights include “Speed” in the 40th anniversary tour of “The Odd Couple”(with Jamie Farr and Bill Christopher of “M*A*S*H” fame); “Hucklebee” in “The Fantasticks” (three times, once with Gary Sandy from “WKRP in Cincinnati” as “El Gallo”); “Charles J. Guiteau” in “Assassins”; “Boolie” in “Driving Miss Daisy”; “Jud Fry” in “Oklahoma!”; “John Watson” in “Sherlock Holmes and the Crime of the Century”; and “Bert” in “Olle from Laughtersville”. Further highlights include every show he’s ever directed.

Today we feature the creator of “The President & The Space Lady”, St Louis Park’s own Phil Hall.

“When people ask a playwright where a play comes from, the answer will vary from individual to individual. Shakespeare might put it one way, Moliere another (in French of course), and Neil Simon will have a third source of inspiration. My particular inspiration is my grandmother, Elizabeth Kerr.

“If you don't recognize the name, her claim to fame came when she co-starred in the hit series of the late 70's Mork & Mindy.

“As you watch this show about a President who faces multiple challenges immediately upon taking office on Christmas Eve, I have to thank my Grandmother for showing me the world of entertainment.

“In 1947 my grandmother and grandfather teamed with another couple to start The Glendale Center Theater in Glendale, California. It was originally founded to give the founders a place to perform, and a playwright a place to do her plays, but being in the Hollywood area, it proved popular with actors and actresses eager to attract attention. It must have worked too, because even though my grandparents sold out to the other couple five years later, that theater is still running today.

“In 1959 I was ten years old, and one afternoon my parents took me to see Grandma. They even made me dress in a suit and tie! The reason for the suit was because I was being taken to the theater where Grandma was a featured player in an early Bob Fosse musical called ‘Redhead’. It was a Saturday matinee, and from the moment the overture started I was mesmerized by the experience.

“That night, thanks to my grandmother I got to sit on a little stool backstage in the wings right next to the stage manager. Watching a Bob Fosse musical from backstage was an introduction to a way of life that has guided my daily activities for over half a century. It was an introduction to a life of fun and creativity that can manifest anywhere people gather and decide to put on a show. I'm proud that my play has provided the fun for the cast and crew that it has.

“My Grandmother and I were very close. She died in California in early Sept 2002, less than month after her 100th birthday. She's buried in her hometown of Kansas City, MO. On the day she was buried, my wife and I were the only two mourners there.

“This play is dedicated to her.”

We’d like you to meet Kaitlyn Cape, our Stage Manager, who’s making her Park Theater Company debut with “The President & The Space Lady”.

Some of Kaitlyn's previous shows are, as Stage Manager, “The Lightning Thief”, “Good Cop/Bad Cop”, “Short Shakes: Romeo and Juliet”, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical”, “Knock Knock”, and “The 9 Worst Breakups in History”, and “Once Upon a Mattress”, “Little Women”, “The Addams Family”, and “Into the Woods” as Assistant Stage Manager.

Kaitlyn loves making earrings, reading, playing her oboe, and spending quality time with her dog, Atlas. Kaitlyn will be attending the University of Iowa in the fall to pursue a degree in Stage Management in Technical Theater.

“Sometimes there's a man... I won't say a hero, 'cause, what's a hero? But sometimes, there's a man. And I'm talkin' about Bob Malos here. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in.”

Bob Malos has been heroic enough to join our merry band as he steps into the role of General Mensa in “The President & The Space Lady.

Mensa is an officious condescending, conniving overgrown child with a soft spot for his Mommy. He is the White House Chief of Staff, “The President’s Brain” (“Sort of an upgrade from idiot to imbecile.”) and the main antagonist to our hero, Egbok “ET” Wilty.

For the past six years, Jake has been teaching math and running the drama department at Benilde-St. Margaret’s School in St. Louis Park, MN. He’s thrilled to get out from the director’s table and back onstage.

On Christmas Day, hapless ex-astronaut Vice President Egbok “ET” Wilty is whisked back to the Oval Office from his South Pole exile to stand in for an incapacitated POTUS, but the order of presidential succession is challenged when an unexpected, mysterious visitor suddenly arrives in the Oval Office that only the VP can see and hear, and the Speaker of the House is standing by ... just in case.

The President and the Space Lady is a seriously silly salute to '60s sitcoms.

Timmy Rawerts (Captain Marshall Meeker) is excited to be part of this production and is humbled to be included in such a professional cast. You may have seen Timmy around town at Lyric Arts Theater, Theater in the Round, Expressions Theater, the Eden Prairie Players and others.
Timmy learned his acting skills from Lev Mailer who learned the craft from Sanford Meisner directly. Lev’s death has left a huge hole in his life and he dedicates this show to him.

After suffering a stroke in 2021 Timmy had to relearn how to walk and talk and is elated he can perform again. He wants to thank his wife Gina Light for nursing him back to health and being such a great partner in crime.

A big guy with a big heart, the appropriately named Captain Marshall Meeker is a U.S. Army security specialist who just wants to finish testing his new “P.U. powered” security system and go play Santa at the orphanage. But his CO, the Vice President, the Speaker of the House, and an invisible Oval Office guest have other ideas.

Playwright Phil Hall modeled the character on the late, beloved Marshall Hambro, to whom our production is dedicated.
