Jade…
Years ago I painted a background on a 32x40 matt board, but never did anything with it. I was in love with the colors and the texture of the finished background, but I was perplexed on what I wanted to do next. Literately 15 plus years later, I pulled the board out and placed it on my painting easel and stared at the matt board and still drew a blank. After a while of staring at the matt board my daughter walks in the room and asked “Why are you staring at the board?” I informed her that she was a baby when I first started this painting, but I did not know what to add to it next. She looked at the board for about 30 seconds and said “Paint an elephant” and walked away. Ladies and gentlemen; I introduce you to… “Jade”… named after my daughter.

My vision of Psalm 91…
Years ago one of my best friends was about to be deployed to the Dessert Storm War. Prior to his deployment, one of his uncles who fought in World War II; gave my friend some yellow cards with the sacred words of Psalm 91 on the card. He told my friend that Psalm 91 is considered the “Solder’s Prayer” because it conveys the themes of God’s protection and rescue from danger. Although I myself; never served in any form of the military, my friend handed me one of the cards and told me to read it every day and to memorize it. As I started reading the card every day I began to visualize what I was reading. One day I decided it was time to put my vision on paper. To this day my friend still carries his card in his wallet as it was confirmed that he was protected by God during his tour. He does not like talking about it, but minutes after leaving a building, the building was bombed and the building collapsed with no survivors. Unfortunately, my card was misplaced, but I created my very own cards which are displayed on the prints of “My Vision of Psalm 91”/with words.

Silhouette Dreams…
The power of a dream can be the sole reason a person discovers their true passion in life. A dream gives us hope, as well as playing the GPS role of guiding us to success; providing we accept that dream as the gift that it is. This young man’s dream places him in this particular jazz club as the main attraction for many nights, however; he knows his GPS dreams will guide him to bigger and better venues.

She is the Black Woman…
For those who know me well, know that I do not discriminate against anyone due to their color, religion or for whatever reason you can think of simply because; I love all people. The words to this image came to me one day so after writing the words down, the vision popped in my head minutes later. These words and the image are dedicated to the BEAUTIFUL BLACK WOMEN, and I’m unapologetic about it. You see, my mother and father raised 3 boys which meant my mother was out numbered 4 males to one female. However; she was truly the matriarch of the family and she wore it with pride as she chased my brothers and I around the house while throwing shoes at us or whatever else she could get her hands on. She was there for us by all means necessary and she still is to this day. So I dedicated this picture to my mother and the Beautiful BLACK WOMEN who walk on this earth as the queens they are.

Prior To The Session…
The smooth sounds of jazz never failed to ease my mind. The magical thing about these particular icons; Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane and Billie Holiday is the fact that they all were innovators in the world of jazz in some positive form or fashion. The gentleman in this piece is about to hit the stage, but before he does he takes a moment to give respect to some of the greats who opened the door for him. When I started this piece, I had an entirely different image in my head (maybe one day I will bring that image to life), but as I continued to work on the picture, my mind and heart became more and more intrigued with what was unfolding in front of my eyes. My father had a collection of albums that consisted of mostly jazz and R&B so after purchasing my very first stereo system, I spent hours at a time recording various songs from a wide range of my father’s albums onto tape cassettes for my car. It was the smile and gratifying look on my father’s face, with his eyes closed and now the passenger in my car; that gave me the satisfaction that he knew he passed down to me, his love and appreciation of music. My father was also a huge fan of art and one of my biggest fans/critics. This is truly one piece I wish my father were here to celebrate with me.
