Award-winning Maryland magician Dave Thomen is expanding his tribute to legendary escape artist Harry Houdini by presenting one of the most talked about and dangerous feats ever associated with the famous magician: the needle swallowing illusion.
The classic stunt, popularized by Houdini during his travels with circus and vaudeville performances In Maryland and surrounding states, involves the apparent swallowing of numerous sewing needles and a length of thread. Moments later, the performer dramatically produces the needles already threaded together, creating one of the magic's most astonishing sights.
Thomen recently added the routine to his performing repertoire as part of his ongoing efforts to preserve and share the history of magic with modern audiences. While presenting under controlled performance conditions, the effect remains renowned as one of the most daring demonstrations in the history of stage magic.
The new presentation follows several recent Houdini-related milestones for Thomen. In July 2026, he joined more than 200 magicians in Appleton, Wisconsin, for a historic tribute marking the 100th anniversary year of Houdini's death. Participants performed Houdini's famous Siberian Chain Escape simultaneously, and Thomen received an official certificate of participation from The Society of American Magicians. The event was held during Appleton's officially proclaimed “Houdini Day.”
